Has anyone been to India recently and had any experience with (not) taking Rupees into the country?
I'm seeing conflicting information online regarding what is allowed.
A lot of sites are saying that only Non-Resident Indians can bring Rs25,000 into the country, whilst Travelex state that this allowance also applies to tourists arriving by air.
Can anyone offer any clarity here? |  |

Take £, the crisper and newer the better. Places to exchange in every large city. Change a few quid at tge airport if need be but you'll get much better deals in the cities. |  |

No, I think you are misunderstanding the rules. As a foreigner, you can bring up to 25,000 Indian Rupees (just over £200) in cash into the country. |  |

When I worked for Travelex we didn't sell Rupees. Not sure if that has changed.
Don't think any other provider did either. |  |

You can take up to 25K rupees into India without declariing it, above that you would need to declare it as you enter.
However, not may currency vendors sell Rupees in the UK, so it is challenging anyhow.

Yes, All correct info.
Probably just 25,000 Rupees allowed in as Rupees but can take up to $5,000 in cash though should declare that on their form. If just say 1,000 no need to declare...read small print on the customs form which often changes.
I live here, and money is one aspect that is very easy. It is possible to get Rupees in UK at Heathrow at an awful exchange rate, so don’t bother.
On Indian arrival change just enough pounds for immediate needs at the airport. In the city find a bank/ forex kiosk or better still a black marketeer to change a larger sum. Oh largest note is 500Rp (the 2,000Rp note is obsolete)
Probably take pounds, as if you take dollars that’s a double forex loss to you(pounds to dollars to rupees) Furthermore dollar is somewhat unstable now(even more so than our pound)
Using a UK bank card is also very quick and easy at ATM machines. 10,000rupees usually the maximum but you can repeat.
As an aside: clarity is a joke in this existence, especially in India… |  | | |
