It would be a showreel of the work Charlton do off the ball, out of possession and particularly in transition. That is the bedrock of a good team. If we think back to our earlier time under KM, that is what we had. We had a base of extreme work rate in and out of possession, of taking responsibility and ownership. Working for each other. We then built really good football on top of that to become the team we were. Props to Charlton tonight and our lads could do with spending a few moments watching that and reflecting. I'm not saying we don't have it - but Charlton are a different level in that regard.

We shipped in goals for fun. But we didn't care as we scored them. Think how many times we conceded the first goals. What we were were very good at which doesn't seem as good this season to me 1.. converting shots. Dreadful really. Hirst. Sammy. Akpom. Etc all guilty this season. 2.. winning the ball in the opponents half.. do we? Seems like the only time we pick the ball up is when it's been headed away or it's been an opponent attack and we've cleared up rather than us winning the ball back in their half.

I've spent time reviewing out past performances (side hustle) and you'll be surprised by just how much work our L1 and Champ winning teams did off the ball. Our transitions were really quick, especially on turnover of possession and counter attacking. Both in and out of possession we had to work so hard to allow Davis (and Clark on the right) the freedom to bomb forward. I could go on.

Did we turnover the ball more tho higher up the pitch. This is where I feel we haven't been great at this season it almost feels like as soon as we lose the ball high.. we get it back once it's deep in our half..

So, our ability to 'win the ball higher up' is a rather nice example of the out of possession work we did well in L1 and Champ before the Prem.

Yeah course sorry I was in agreement with you. Sorry thought I'd written that in my last reply apologies. I just meant in my first post our off the ball work beyond that part of the pitch was never that great.

Our high press was literally fundamental to our success in the double promotions. We tried it at the start of last year and found most teams are good enough to play out. I do think its been lacking significantly this season though. There's no cohesion with the press at all. It's got to be one of the 'non-negotiables' of our team. Philogene has been good at it, as has Clarke, the 10s and the midfield have not continued it though, so we can't suffocate teams like we used to.

We looked all over the shop when charlton got the ball, azon bless him didn't know where to press, mcateer went then didnt then went then didnt, sometimes he went but young didnt so they had an easy pass option anyway, clarke imo was the only fella in that lineup who busted a gut to get the ball
