Received food delivery last night and managed to leave a couple of vacuum-sealed steaks on the counter rather than in the fridge. Woke this morning to see them staring at me. They were on the countertop for less than 12 hours.

Now in the middle of a debate as to whether i should cook and eat them. I personally think they are fine; they were refrigerated in the delivery van before arriving, and the house was fairly chilly as it was overnight.

Quesiton is, would you eat them or just toss them / feed them to the dog?

My wife wouldn't - they'd be in the bin.

Your wife wouldn't pass the sniff test?

I think they'd be fine but I wouldn't eat them rare.

*PS Ryorry says vacuum packed in a cool kitchen for less than 12 hours they’ll be fine as long as they pass the sniff test, and she’s usually very cautious.

*might have made this shiz up, but it's in my head somewhere.

When I was young, we would get a Christmas turkey fresh off the farm and leave it hanging up in the garage for several days. Much like with game, it adds to the flavour and tenderness of the meat.

However, a lot comes down to how sensitive your stomach is - and how much you might be put off psychologically by knowing it had been out. Make sure it's cooked properly (not blue this time).

I'd be happy with just shooing off the flies and giving it a quick look at the frying pan on both sides.
 Serve with chips an mushrooms.
 Black forest ghetto for desert..

This whole chef business seems easy enough

Conclusion is that i am going to cook both, and then see what happens. Won't know the smell until I open then, but my feeling is they are fine to eat.

I can see this plays out already, either I get two steaks this evening or the dog and me both gets one each 😂

My kitchen is currently probably as cold as the fridge so would have no issues eating. Also depends on what steak. If ribeye or fillet then no chance that would go in the bin. I’d take the potential food poisoning any day over the loss of one of those hunky lumps of meat.
