Over the last couple of games I have noticed a shift with referees in that if a player goes down injured then they call the physios straight om. It happened on Tuesday night when a Charlton player, and it happened yesterday when O'Shea went down. In O'Shea's case he got up without any treatment, had a bit of an argument with the ref and had to go off the pitch for the mandatory minute just as he would if he had been treated on the pitch.
On Tuesday, the ref also penalised the CHarlton jkeeper for holding on to the ball too long and awarded us a corner.
These two developments seem to be designed to combat timewasting, at long last. I just hope they are not the sort of initiatives that are enforced for a couple of weeks then forgotten. |  |

The referees are required by law to show a visual countdown for the last 5 seconds of the keeper holding onto the ball so hopefully that means this one will last. To be fair, it has speeded things up with goalkeepers no longer holding onto the ball for 20+ seconds. [Post edited 26 Oct 12:20]

Was the O'Shea one because the ref believed it to be a head injury? I assumed there must be a law in place to say that if it's a head injury an outfield player has to go off regardless. Bit daft that he wasn't forced to get treatment if that's the case though. |  | | |
