I don't think we're able to judge that really. All we see is 90 minutes on the pitch. We have no idea about the dynamics of the dressing room and the personalities or popularity within it.

I'm sure the captain and leadership roles are decided unanimously by the squad.

I totally agree that the role goes beyond just what happens on the pitch, but I really hope the role is not decided by the squad - that would not be a recipe for putting in place a person who is prepared to take tough decisions etc.

I disagree. Players make it to that level out of sheer dedication and competitiveness. They’ll choose a captain who will lift them etc rather than someone who they simply all like.
