Is it just me or is security at Portman Road becoming a little over the top?
For a while now we have had the wand scanner...beep, beep..."what's that in your pocket?"..."my car keys"...."ok, go on in".
Last night, I was scanned then had to empty out my numerous pockets on to a table...trousers, fleece & coat. Then I was asked "what is under your hat?" He wasn't impressed when I told him "a bald head" and curtly told me to "take it off".
Seriously? I'm probably the least unlikely hooligan to try and enter the stadium. I am now old enough to collect my pension and struggle to climb all the steps to the top of the SAR Upper. Even last season, most stewards looked at me, smiled when I put my hands out, and said "no, don't worry".
Has the threat level risen from pensioners? |  | | |  |

Peformative and irrational too.
I have no issue with being scanned before entry as I have been every game so far this season and if I choose to rock up at my normal time and miss the first few minutes of the game then that's my choice. What gets my goat is the 15 people in front of me and 30 behind me gainimg entry to the stadium without being scanned.
If you're going to do it, do it right or don't bother. |
Tuesday night. Security guy waved wand. I open the little rucksack i bring with water, a hat, and a rain coat. He says "don't need to look in that.... they'll check inside".
I agree. Do the job properly or don't do it at all. If properly means slower then we'll eventually all factor that in. But at the moment is neither one thing or the other |  |

It's security theatre though Frimmers, given the half-arsed job they do most of the time.
They told me yesterday that they are going to start cracking down on any bags larger than A4 size. Apparently my small rucksack with a book and a bottle of water in is too big - all very well for anyone who lives locally but a pain for anyone travelling or after work. |
I always go to mid week games straight after work with a rucksack or laptop bag and not once has it ever been a problem or been a suggestion its too large i can't take it in. Have to take a laptop as work from home most of the week.
Just a quick look inside and wave me in.
That will never change.
There must be people that travel with medication and all sorts.
Thnk you just must have been unlucky with an idiot security staff memeber or they just say it to encourage peope to think about not bringing a bag, but as you say for those that are not local and travel directly afer work a bag is kind of essential. |  |

Before the WBA game, the person doing the scan told me that I couldn't take my cup of coffee (bought from the coffee shop opposite the council offices) into the ground.
I said that I'd drink the contents before I went in, and they were fine with that. Of course, I didn't do that and took it through the turnstile. I passed a couple of stewards in the space between the search and the turnstile, neither of whom seemed to have a problem with my cup of coffee.
I was searched while holding a similar cup of coffee at the turnstile earlier in the season without comment. They seem to be making it up as they go along. |  | | |

Soon we'll have these scanners at train stations, cinemas, theatres, bus stations, shopping centres and churches. With a bit of luck we'll have armed guards patrolling these places too and we'll all feel really safe. It's a win, win, win for everybody. We don't get stabbed to death or blown up in the cinema or on the terraces, security companies make a packet, we love our government for keeping us safe and then all the terrorists leave the country because there's no way they can kill us anymore.

There was a couple a few in front of me approaching the turnstiles, both had a slim can of vodka or somesuch, the girl took the guy's off him, and put them both in her back pockets of her jeans prior to scanning, and carried straight through. I then was asked to empty my pockets, with keys, phone, AirPods when it got to me. Inconsistent. | | | |

It doesn't need to be consistent at all. If there is "intelligence" indicating a higher risk for a specific match, then fine, pat me down if you have to. But if I have to do that every match, I'll stay at home and football will die and the terrorists have won. | | | |
