Genuinely... I would like to know the opinion on this. 19:09 - Nov 5 with 1915 viewswaveneyblue

My son referees youth football and received this message yesterday.....

Good afternoon all, I hope you are well.

I have received the following regarding Remembrance Day on Sunday:

I have had some members of the public raise questions about the observing of 2 minutes silence on Remembrance Sunday morning. As most of you will know across the country at 11am normally, communities gather to observe 2 minutes of silence in respect to the fallen in past conflicts. The concerns that have been raised with me has been that this is often made difficult by the noise and voices coming from football pitches usually quite near to village churches, memorials or cenotaphs.

The observation of 2 minutes silence is an individual choice and cannot be mandated, however could you please reach out to your clubs to ask them to respect the wishes of their local communities and avoid if possible being active at 11am on Remembrance Sunday. This may mean timing KO’s to ensure that at that time no football is being played, if that is possible. I do understand that most clubs hold their silence at the start of a match but although that is respectful and much appreciated, it still doesn’t take into account the silence that some communities wish for at 11am.

I hope that you all understand where this is coming from and I am passing on a request from communities where football is played.

I coached for the last 3 years and we always held 2 minute silence at kick off, which we made sure was totally respected (and it always was). My feelings are that the matches should go on as normal and everyone should be allowed to pay respects in their own way.

But maybe its just me.... Hence the question.

Definitely feels heavy handed. What time is kick-off for each half? It feels a much larger imposition if the game needs to be stopped compared to waiting a minute or two at the start of a half.

It’s standard corporate ‘guidance’ designed to be ignored, but so they can say they did something.

“We issued guidance”……”we asked”….

Unfortunately in some cases the necessary adjustments won’t be possible.

The concept that the ‘whole country’ stops at 11:00 just isn’t practical.

Will they be walking onto the A14 to stop the traffic? Muzzling every dog, cat or baby? Or getting a shotgun out to stop the birds from singing?

Poll: Who do you think is a better right-footed centre back?

Not wanting to speak for them, but I will. I'm pretty sure those that have fallen wouldn't have a problem with the sounds of kids playing football at 11 o'clock.

I noticed Lowestoft station lamposts were "wearing" poppies when I caught the train to the match the other day!
Bonkers!

Indeed, that very freedom is what they fought for.

Been a good discussion this, no arguing or calling each other out even though opinions differ.

Great stuff
