What kind of scum would do that. And how would they dump this amount of waste without being noticed? Its fly tipping on an industrial scale and would have required fleets of trucks to the site

Those are shockingly light sentences for the amount it will cost to put right. But I guess the judge can only sentence within the guidelines. Tougher penalties are needed to deter these fly by night operators

The max sentence is 10 years. 3 years is a very significant point on the sentencing scale because it exempts you from a lot of provisions under rehabilitation legislation and your conviction significantly impacts the rest of your life, a bit like their impact on the environment. You can 'spend' these convictions quickly enough and move on. Hopefully there will be efforts to get their assets to pay for the clean up. There has to be a deterant element in environmental crime convictions or we will see more of this as waste charges increase.

So an arrest has been made, but do you think they have the person who decided on the fly tipping, or even someone who will tell the authorities who was directing him ?

What caught my eye in that story was "The landowner of the neighbouring site said he saw truckloads of rubbish dumped there every night for months." which begs the question of why it took so long to stop (did the neighbour not report it, or did the authorities not do anything).

Let's hope it is someone who is able to result in a fine being paid commensurate with the cost of cleaning it up.
