| So the Environment Agency knew about the illegal waste dump 18:39 - Nov 25 with 807 views | LegendofthePhoenix | at Kidlington on 2nd July. There must have been at least 1,000 lorry loads of waste dumped. At least 10 lorry loads per day. Just what exactly do the EA get paid to do if not to stop environmental catastrophes like this? There should be heads rolling and possibly criminal prosecutions at the EA. [Post edited 25 Nov 2025 18:40]

What astounds me is that not once have I heard the Environment Agency say "We're going to clear this up". Clearly it will cost too much for the local authority so surely the EA must act, but they just keep talking about finding the offender to make them responsible. You can do both at the same time! From 2024: “The Environment Agency has continued to suffer, and has faced an overall cut of 50% during the past decade. Freedom of information requests show that in 2018 staff attended 5,013 pollution incidents; by 2023, that number had fallen by 36%. Almost half of England’s nature reserves have not been monitored by government ecologists in recent years, and only 39% of sites of special scientific interest are deemed to be in “favourable condition”.” https://www.theguardian.com/en

Exactly. I think the EA has been affected more than most which leads to self-enforcement and that leads to enormous problems.

The EA just want to pick nice easy jobs. Trying to catch organised criminals dumping waste on a scale like this should be an absolute top priority for them. Instead they like to visit hospitals to check on whether any small amounts of waste are going down the drains. I don't disagree taht they have had their resource levels cut, but taht just means they need to be more discerning about what they police. They've got their priorities wrong - they did nothing on this site between July and October.

FOI requests don't help either, I jest. I got the feeling locals didn't do much about it either but I'm happy to be proven wrong about that. If the guy arrested has made money from this I hope proceeds are taken to help the clear up.
