If Town were a car we'd be a 1970s Lancia 22:04 - Nov 28 with 1058 viewsTNBlue

Expensive, stylish and perform well on a good day but full of weak spots and liable to break down when you need them most.

Well, I’ve seen a real DeLorean close up and it’s the biggest pile of cr@p you could ever clap eyes on. Junk. But omg is it cool. Ice cool so I have to agree with you! Now there’s a contradiction I can’t explain.

Enjoyed the BTTF films too.

Well done you. Much braver than me but I guess as a company car you didn’t have to worry too much. At least they were exciting. The only two I ever had were a Astra and a Vectra. Aside from being fine with Vauxhalls and them not letting me down, excitement was….. zero.

Did you use waxoyl? I did a few times, but I’m not sure it made much difference really.

No, can't recall using it, did not keep them long enough to really worry to much about the eventual rust. I did love them though,
Lancia Gamma Coupe chocolate brown 2.5 litre the biggest 4 cylinder of it's time.
Lancia Volumex Coupe red 2.0 supercharged engine
Lancia Montecarlo 2.0 mid-engined 2 seater

Looked the part while being rubbish. Underpowered Renault mecahicals, overweight for a sportscar and handled so badly it was passed onto Lotus to re-engineer. The British government gave funding to have the car made in Northern Ireland, but a lot of the money intended for that went missing, ending up in a Panamanian bank account, Colin Chapman dying before the fraud could be unravelled. Many were the rumours that he was holed up in Ketteringham Hall, his base near Hethel. Have not seen one in ages, very angular typical 70's wedge design but without the beauty of an Esprit. Saw one of the BTTF cars on display a few years ago.

Likewise it’s an age since I’ve seen one - it was on display somewhere and looked the absolute nuts. Close up it looked as badly made as an Austin Allegro with its variable panel gaps and general shoddiness.

Ta re the story behind it. I knew the great Colin Chapman had something to do with it, that there was some £ disappearance and that it was made in Northern Ireland.

I think it’s better looking than the Esprit, but that’s probably my peculiar taste.

The sadness is that with proper investment it would have been a success. Train and equip a workforce and you can build a good car to high standards anywhere - Nissan at Sunderland are proof of that. Investment is everything. Sadly, in this country we don’t ‘do’ investment.

I guess the DeLorean has to go down as an opportunity lost, along with the gorgeous Triumph Stag and others.

Funnily enough I had a lot of links with Mersea Island when I was a sprog and some bloke had one of those Delorean cars,we’d sit on the youth club wall and the road outside was like a cruise strip, you would get people just driving past all night showing off I guess. All I could manage was my Suzuki AP 50 later on that went to a Suzuki ER 125.

Anyway the chap with the Delorean had a Son a little bit older than me,and when it was his Birthday he bought him a brand new black 3l Capri, which funnily enough sounded and looked better than the Delorean.

My uncle had a JPS Capri.

As for the fizzy every Wednesday night in the summer months we have a motor bike meet, and a few of that sort of things turn up,the monkey bikes are popular to.They seem to attract more people than some of the bigger bikes.

My school chum had one of those FS1Es. It had a purple tank and was uber wanted. There was a Suzuki equivalent but the Yamaha was it.

But back to the Capri - the JPS was the one everyone wanted.
