If we replace McKenna... 21:50 - Dec 2 with 3671 viewsbaxterbasics

Watch us sink like a stone into the lower half of the table. See it time and time again when clubs dump a previously successful manager who's going through a slump. Rarely do things get better.

Just be careful what you wish for.

The next 4 games will decide it, & if we get to Christmas without any improvement i do think we'll be looking for a new manager for the Jan transfer window, feels inevitable.

This idea that we're a club that gives managers time won't mean much to the american owners.

Although McKenna is Ashtons man look how they never gave Cook any time in general Americans are asset strippers and won't put up this for that long.

Elegant centre back, but I think his legs had gone well before 2024. Mariner had him for breakfast in 1978.

If we replace McKenna and sink, then the recruitment must have been truly spectacularly bad, given the amount of money spent. At McKenna's behest. You must have a really bad view of McKenna's recruitment to hold this view.

I don't want the guy sacked, and you're right that sacking someone out of spite or frustration is never the answer. But he's underperforming, and it's hardly a case of "no other manager could possibly have got 7 wins from 18 games with this lot".

I’m mystified why people assume nobody could do a better job than McKenna. There are other managers out there and will be in the future. If McKenna can’t rectify our performances then there are definitely others who could get a tune out of us.

We are 7th from top, not 7th from bottom, and not yet half way through the season. 5 points from second.
Be stupid to sack him at the moment.

I'm starting to think getting Morsy back in would be worth the risk to O'Shea's ego. O'Shea has been a really solid CB all season and I have nothing at all against him, but team spirit looks about 3/10 at the moment, where it was probably never below 7/10 when Sam was here, and usually 9/10 or better.

That's not to say that Sam could magically pull a whole new squad together, but if anyone could...

Do you mean solely as a player; or in some kind of player-coach role?

I'd be against him returning exclusively as a player - most fans are screaming out for more pace from our team, & Morsy with the best will in the world can't defeat Father Time, his legs were ageing when he left us, & I suspect one reason for him choosing to move is that he wanted to leave us while he was still at his peak.

It would also be horrendous to see his hero status drop if his lack of pace meant he'd be making mistakes that led to goals.

In some kind of coaching, motivational, mentoring role & providing cover for a bit of game time if we had an injury/illness/suspensions crisis - yep, think that'd be ace 👍

The answer is not to replace KMc. The problems have been relegation blues, other clubs in the Championship wanting our scalp, integration of new players, too many team changes, over thinking tactics and supporter pressure. There are a few clubs who were performing well that have had a slump in form and need us supporters to go along with the ups and downs at the club. Having million plus players doesn't mean success. The end of the season will signal what decisions are made.

I imagine there are a lot of teams/owners watching on with interest as to what we do with McKenna as there’ll be a list of them as long as anything that would jump at the chance of taking him on a free.

Luckily, for whatever I think of Ashton, I don’t think he’ll be the type that would bow to fan ‘pressure’ and get rid of him.

I’d argue that a season and a half is more than a ‘slump’.

We were relegated with a squad that wasn’t good enough, have spent millions and the squad STILL isn’t good enough.

I’m not McKenna out, but if this was any other club around the country, it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to be under pressure.

We’ve been crap under him for nearly as long as we were good.

Your honestly counting the Prem season …….Jesus some people .

"sink like a stone"?
Why?
I am split on KM. I think he was a good manager with players he could improve to Championship level, yet he hasn't improved many, if any of the £15M-£20M type players. I think he is a great development coach, but I do now have questions of him as a PL manager. I would probably stick with him for this season, but if we don't go up this season, then very serious questions should be asked.

Mike O’Leary retired on 31 July 2024.

Look at our results since.

Something I noticed & have mentioned previously. Ashton is now allowed to do whatever he likes. Needs someone above him to replace Mr O'Leary.

I don't know Ryorry. I'm swinging backwards and forwards on it to be honest, primarily due to not knowing how fit he is.

As far as our needs right now go - to get this season really going (was going to say back on track, but at only 5 points off second, it's not really off track, unless you're thinking about meeting expectations rather than getting promoted) - what we need is an injection of team spirit and morale. Morsy was the epicentre of that for us for two years, and absolutely brilliant at it.

But as Chris pointed out, almost all of that squad have gone and there's no guarantee that Morsy would have anything like the same impact on this squad (and of course would undermine O'Shea to some extent). Morsy looked slow in the Prem, but if he was close to last season's levels, he'd still be top in the Championship, I think. But I can't see how he could be at those same levels as a midfielder really.

So on the whole, I'm thinking not, but it looks like we need that sort of character again.
