Time to pay back McKenna; Operation ‘Confidence Bolster’ 07:48 - Dec 4 with 838 viewsunstableblue

I was there Tuesday. And it wasn’t good and it wasn’t good enough. Fair play to Egeli, and fair play to the team for attacking till the end. The attack itself had a directness, a chaos, and a numbers committed that we needed in the 10th minute and for long sustained periods.

Having said that - at Oxford Taylor tried to play too quickly into their box and the ball gets turned over quickly and they score on the break.

Continuing that theme the Championship can be a tough lottery, and let’s face it despite looking ugly, these teams have some quality in them and you can get punished. Both Oxford and Blackburn had some really decent players smattered through them. And unlike the promotion season, we are getting all the margins going the other way.

But there is also no way that this Town team with the quality in it, and after 18 games should be looking so devoid of cohesion and patterns.

Why are we now looking so weak, when at Swansea we looked good, and against say Norwich we looked very very strong. CONFIDENCE. It’s shot at the moment. The players did not look right in the warm up at Ewood Park, quiet, rabbits in the head lights.

Now this forum is now representing the fan base, and the vibe being projected onto the pitch.

But for me (my opinion) there is no way you don’t give McKenna the season and January, given our league position and what he has done for this club and team.

And if he’s not going, and given that we as a fan base owe him large.

It’s time for a bit of a fan showing against Coventry. Try and enliven the players through support.

Treat it like a cup game.

All we need is a couple of wins and performances and this season could turn quickly. Or the fan base could go full toxic and a vicious confidence spiral truly kicks in.

Back McKenna, pay back time.

It goes without saying that the fan base should be up for it and supporting the team against Coventry, that applies to every game, however we do not 'owe' Mckenna 'large'.

If anything it's the other way round. Mckenna is one of the best paid managers in the country, let alone the championship, it's about time he starting delivering some value back to the club and fans with some consistent results!

Yes. McKenna has given us so much. Now he's struggling a bit we need to give some back. Turn up the support to 11 on Saturday.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

A few things in response:

You say it goes without saying that the fan base should be up for Saturday, and frankly the fact it’s a 3pm Saturday kick off will help. But there is a high chance that if Town are under the cosh, and/or the confidence issue continues then the home fan base may go into their shell, if not go full groan mode (see passing out of the back).

I get your point about McKenna being well paid. But the guy had concrete offers to go to Brighton and Palace with far superior recruitment, technical staff and training facilities. He chose to stay with us. He committed to us. He also took a disjointed and failing dressing room in League One and in the matter of half a season got them ready for two incredible promotion pushes. Giving us the two best seasons since Burley.

He has continued to be clear, eloquent and honest in his comms to the fans.

He’s hitting his first real challenge in management - and he needs support. And for me do own him large.

All this nonsense talk of KM out filters back to everyone at Portman Rd , it’s hard enough for us to fathom out what’s gone wrong , but all this negativity from all social media just magnifies everything out of proportion……do you not all think that every club from John o’Groats to Lands End goes through sticky spells ? ….keep the faith and be careful what you wish for .

Honking opinion.

It may be more correct to say we owe each other. Yes,s we gave him his first opportunity and a platform... but the man has done a fantastic job and given a lot to this club and our community. I'm certain he could have left multiple times overs (I get that he's been handsomely compensated for not doing so, but PL managers aren't badly paid and the allure of a Brighton must have been strong).

Not only, will it reflect really poorly on this club and our fans if we turn on him at the first sign of problems but it is cutting off our nose to spite our face because it won't improve the players performances.

Good post.

Again a key point here is that McKenna could have left us, had real, advanced and tempting offers to clubs in a better position to further his career. And he stayed with us. And I’m sure the fan connection was part of that.

And now we want to eject him, or probably in more cases not vocally back him and the players on matchday.

But another key point is chopping off your nose to spite your face! Look at Wolves - bringing in a new and seemingly good fit manager did nothing to resolve their issue yesterday - which is player confidence. Their players looked terrified. Imagine removing the lynchpin of the club and the man who has brought them in… we’d potentially fall apart.

Giving McKenna the season and January is the minimum - so let’s back the project.

Criticism is valid, and McKenna has worked at Old Trafford where he’d have seen worse fan dissent. But people need some personal - and also just remember what the championship is like!!

I said the fan base 'should' be up for it and supportive against Coventry that that we will be. There is every chance of it turning quiet or even a bit toxic if we are getting well beaten.

but here is the thing, how about the incredibly well paid manager and the expensively assembled team actually give the supporters something to get behind? We need to see some urgency and tempo from the off not leaving it until the last 10 minutes when we are losing like against Blackburn. The recent home performances have not been good at all, ambling to home draws against Watford and Wrexham is not going to cut it, especially when following that up with poor away performances against lowly opposition.

I appreciate what KM has done for us, although in reality he has had one steller season. Any decent manager should be able to get Ipswich out of league 1 with the backing that he was given, and we still ultimately finished behind Plymouth. I can't give him too much credit for that. He did what was needed and expected and did a good job, but nothing more.

The Championship promotion season was exceptional, and all credit to him, however since then we have been very disappointing. It is not all on KM, Ashton and the recruitment team have to take some share of the blame but Football is a results business and the manager ultimately carries the Can.

I am sure this wil get another flurry of down votes and that's fine but I really do question the mentality of some of our fan base. The way I see it is that KM is paid very well to get results, sentiment shouldn't come into it. In the here and now we have a financial advantage and a squad full of talent for this level. If KM is unable to get a proper tune out of this squad soon then he should pay the price for that.

I of course do not want to see toxicity at the ground, we should turn up and give them our full support and keep the moaning until afterwards on here if it all goes wrong, however I stand by my position, we don't 'owe' KM anything. If we are ambitous as a club like we say we are then he needs to start delivering, and soon.

Good luck with that. Portman Road has been a library all season. It wasn't even very good when we were beating Norwich. It's a shame as I don't really understand the point of going to a match and spending 90 minutes with your hands in your pockets grumbling but that seems to be what most of our fans are doing.
