| Although Eurovision on 10:17 - Dec 5 with 215 views | NthQldITFC | If gutless, complicit so-called civilised governments cannot bring themselves to apply political, economic or military sanctions against a rogue state carrying out a appalling, long-term, murderous assault against a people and trying to, at the very least, ethnically cleanse them from what is left of their homeland after eighty years, then social sanctions at some crappy, cheesy event might be the best the pathetic human species can achieve. | |

| Although Eurovision on 10:58 - Dec 5 with 109 views | EddyJ | Its a tricky one. On the one hand, we want competitons like football or eurovision to be apolitical. They *should* be exclusively about sporting/artistic merit. But we all know they are not. Ronaldo having his ban shortened. The Qatar world cup decision. Tactical voting in Eurovision. Politics is rife. We also don't want to punish the citizens of these countries for the actions of their governments, that they may or may not agree with. We do not have many weapons to combat bad nation-state actors. We can't take any direct military action against nuclear powers like Russia or Israel. So excluding countries from Eurovision is about the best we can do. Then you need to make a judgement about the badness of their actions. There are lots of "bad actors" at the nation level. We actively encourage Afghanistan to play cricket. That is not seen as an endorsement of the Taliban - the opposite, in fact, as many of the Afghan players learned to play whilst in exile in Pakistan. We also allow Qatar and Saudi Arabia to host World Cups. How bad is bad enough to warrant action? With Russia it is very clear cut that they are an extreme bad actor. One sovereign country has invaded another sovereign country with little provocation. Its easy to sanction that. With Israel its harder. They were provoked by the Hamas attacks. There has been a history of violence from both sides. Both Israel and Palestine have at least some claim to the land, although the strength of these is debatable. Palestine is not currently a sovereign country by most metrics, and the main political force in Gaza (Hamas) is widely considered a terrorist group. Genocide is hard to quantify - at what point does reasonable force and collateral damage become genocide? There is also the question of greater good. If the west were to cut Israel adrift, would that cause greater instability in the middle east? Would it embolden Iran? | | | |
