| Players coming in to the team who have staked their claim 06:56 - Dec 8 with 1223 views | LegendofthePhoenix | Since the debacle at home to Charlton, we've seen 3 players who have come in and really staked their claim. Walton, Kipre and Taylor. I don't think many would have seen those 3 as more than back-up options, but they have transformed us - our form has been 2nd in the league over the subsequent 9 matches. That's showing the desire and effort to force your way in that is a great sign, and has surely helped to decide our first choice line up. No.10 still up for grabs. Anyone? | |

Yep, looks like it. If he can consistently turn in performances like Saturday, then 10 is sorted.

Nunez best seems to come from deeper positions when he drops back as a third midfielder though. He's better in there than Akpom or Szmodics but still think Egeli is the man we should be playing there.

Think that will ultimately be his position. Perhaps he’ll get a chance there when Wes is fully up to speed. Think he’ll stay on the right for the foreseeable future

Egeli is definitely going to end up a 10, his ability to pick a pass is there for all to see You'd also expect him to get into the Chaplin positions more regularly for the finish. A fit Burns and obviously time will tell if he gets his full pace back, would make the job of the 10 much easier

His goal was a vintage Chaplin goal from a Chaplin position.

That's the best role for him, he was deeper on Saturday than a conventional 10 might be, almost at the head of a 3 with the licence to get forward and create in the 'pockets'. He's very dangerous there with the vision and quality he has. He's the definition of a player where you just need to create the role that plays to his strengths. I really like the balance of Taylor, Matusiwa, Nunez. I think it has a bit of everything, we just look short beyond those 3 and 'stylistically' if Akpom is in there instead it needs to be more of an out and out 10 role.

I think that McKenna saw that having a floaty ten type wasn't going to work in the Prem again and so wanted to create a more physical profile there which made them a second striker type who would run the channels and press more (Szmodics/Akpom). What has materialised is that we are facing a lot of teams that are sitting off and therefore a creative 10 is actually more important than ever as Akpom has a lot of neat and tidy touches but doesn't really break the lines passing wise and Szmodics is only really interested in getting in behind. Nunez for me is the other way where if maybe Akpom/Szmodics are 9.5s, he is an 8.5 who is suited to dropping back and pinging passes from deep. Coventry playing a high line and not getting much pressure on him as ball player is probably his dream opportunity really. I think what would be handy is if we could get a Leif type relationship on the right hand side to allow for width there from the full back to allow Walle Egeli to drift inside, but that might leave us with an imbalance (as I don't think Taylor or Cajuste are as effective as Luongo was at covering wide spaces in transition to cover that full back gap). | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Agree with that, Akpom really feels like a 2nd forward in there which isn't a surprise given its where he's spent his career, compared to Nunez who looks much more natural operating deeper. On Saturday I think it enabled us to get a stronger foothold and dominate the ball a bit more, especially in the 2nd half. I think if we do that we have enough quality in wide areas to hurt teams. I thought Nunez' energy and defensive work was excellent as well. I like Akpom and Szmodics and they both clearly have qualities that should benefit us, but I don't think its in the 10.
