It’s just football. 08:33 - Dec 14 with 288 viewsbsw72

If you spend any time on here it’s hard not to notice how wildly the mood swings from one game to the next. A good result and the place is full of optimism, a bad one and it feels like everything has suddenly gone off the rails. It’s almost become part of the weekly routine.

A lot of that is just the reality of being fans, reacting to what we’ve just watched, usually while it’s still fresh and emotional. One performance can make the team look miles ahead of where we thought they were, the next can undo all that confidence in 90 minutes. Neither reaction is wrong, but neither is the full picture either.

I think the truth sits a little in the middle and this side is still learning. Players are getting used to each other, patterns are still forming and consistency takes time. That process isn’t smooth or predictable. There will be good days when it clicks and looks effortless, and there will be off days when things don’t quite work and it feels frustrating to watch.

It’s also worth remembering how hard it is to make straight comparisons with two years ago. The team has changed, the division has changed and football itself has moved on. What worked then doesn’t automatically translate now, and judging today’s performances through that lens can be misleading without factoring in how much stronger, faster and more tactical the league has become.

There’s also a big difference in mindset across this division. Relegated sides and clubs backed by parachute payments carry the weight of expectation every week, with pressure to dominate and get back up quickly. Smaller clubs have less to lose and less to prove but again money spent does not equate to winning the division. Teams are going to have good weeks and bad weeks, Leicester clicked against us yesterday but had not been great before that; we clicked against Cov having had poor results before with Coventry having won 5 on the bounce. Doesn’t mean for any of those teams that everything is going right or wrong based on the last result.

Bad results don’t suddenly mean the project is broken, just as good ones don’t mean everything is finished and perfect. They’re all part of the same journey. The swings in opinion say more about how invested we all are than they do about any single performance.

Brilliant post. If there were a once a season 'golden up arrow' I'd give you mine.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Spot on.

When did hysteria become part of football? Social media age I suppose.

I just got the end of the 'huddle around Dixon's window to see the results come in' age and while not perfect it was without a doubt a simpler and more normal time.

Largely agree, the middle ground is that we're pretty bang average!

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.
