….to let him leave, whilst in contract, for sod all.
It made no sense at the time, and it makes even less sense now.
Selling him for a fee would have been understandable. Even letting him run down his contract and go for nothing next summer would have been fine. But to let him wander off for nothing, apparently out of “sentiment” was ridiculous.
There is no defending it at all from a business perspective and very little from a football perspective.

That doesn't stop fans from referring back to that team, though. I'm sure you can appreciate that fans are going to be looking back to that season and expecting more from this current squad considering we signed the top scorer, one of the best defenders, and one of the best left wingers in the league that season.
Yet none of those 3 are in our supposed best starting XI. |
The scenarios they are competing in are different. That team didn't face a low block most weeks and had plenty of space to work, that is not the case for this team.
Playing against a low block is difficult, when teams attack us we generally do pretty well when there is space.
I think most agree that it's been disappointing so far but context is important in my view and continually referring back to that team to undermine this one isn't ideal. People can obviously do as they wish though.
