| McAteer reminds me of................ 10:03 - Dec 27 with 1023 views | cbower | This is for the (somewhat) older fans............Stuart Slater. Back in the day we paid the not inconsiderable sum of £750,000 for young Slater. He was a wideman who had burst on to the top flight at West Ham, flopped at Celtic but we were hopeful of a renaissance in blue. Nothing seemed to work for him in a Town shirt. He appeared to try hard but to no avail. I cannot remember what happened to him and fear that the same fate is awaiting Kasey McAteer. That first half yesterday was as poor a performance in an Ipswich shirt as I've seen in a good while. Joe Fairs and David Diamond on Blue Monday match reaction were incredulous if you fancy a watch (equally so about the hapless shark Ivan Azon btw). It could all be so different for Kasey. He spurned a great chance early in his Town career against Derbt iirc, other misses too, especially Wrexham could have changed the narrative. He's put in a few decent crosses but cr@p finishing from our strikers mean he has yet to record a valuable assist and other than sheer hard running, nobody can see why we have spent a heap of cash on him. It's all so......well.........Stuart Slater. | |

Lots of running but doesn't generally do that well think he may eventually get a goal but hes the sort of signing I'd have expected coming up from league 1 rather than down from the prem.

It was our (joint?) record signing at the time I think.

I don't get why so many of our fans are so keen to stick the boot in. The same happened to Muric who is back to his best back in Italy now. If only the fans could give him a chance but you are right, they won't and it will be a remarkable turnaround now if he does make it.

Darren Currie described himself as a "slow winger". A good player though.

I just checked Ogbene's stats at Sheffield Utd, he has made just 10 appearances with no goals or assists apparently. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yeah agree with that. Especially as Harness was a fraction of the price of Nanny McFee
| McAteer reminds me of................ on 13:09 - Dec 27 with 511 views | lazyblue | Slater arrived with lots of optimism as being the star player but like you say he never quite made it but tried so bloody hard. I remember we were all singing his name in the pub at QPR before his first game and he just didn’t not feature at all in the match. | | | |

I've still no idea what KM saw in McAteer, Burns will feel like a huge upgrade when he's up and firing again..

4 goals in 72 appearances for ITFC for Slater. Don't forget, McAteer scored against us in the last game of last season! For context, he had 7 in 44 games for Leicester. [Post edited 27 Dec 14:18]

| McAteer reminds me of................ on 14:20 - Dec 27 with 292 views | Radlett_blue | Stuart Slater was seen as a really promising player in his early days at West Ham. I think he got an achilles injury & lost his form, failing to score in 51 appearances in 1991-92. Nevertheless, West Ham managed to persuade Celtic to pay £1.5m for him (a tidy sum then) thanks to the gullible Celtic manager, Liam Brady (a former team mate of Slater). He flopped there, scoring 3 times in 43 games before Lyall was daft enough to pay £750k for a player on the downgrade. I groaned when we signed him & Slater was a huge disappointment at Town until we gave him a free & he spent 3 injury afflicted years at Watford. | |

Didn't people reckon Swallow was actually better than Jason but a complete mad man?

I am nonplussed at to what McKenna saw in McAteer that made him think he was worth £12m. He works hard & is reasonably tidy with the ball, but these are basic requirements for a professional footballer playing in his position. He's had a poor start to his Town career & now he seems incapable of making a decision when he gets on the ball. We had a break in the first half & McAteer could have picked a pass, could have shot, but he ran aimlessly with the ball before hitting a shot that was obviously going to be blocked. A Leicester fan friend of mine couldn't believe we'd paid that for a player he saw as a useful squad filler. And he's 24, with over 70 Football League games behind him & 8 Ireland caps, not some raw kid who might improve.

I guess 70 appearances and 8 Ireland caps suggest that he does do things that managers appreciate him for. He is clearly very low on confidence and a target for fans. His career here is going the same way as Muric's (Burnley fans also said similar about him). I wouldn't be at all surprised for him to blossom away from here where he is given a chance but it appears too late for him to be given that chance by our fans here.
