McAteer reminds me of................ 10:03 - Dec 27 with 2332 viewscbower

This is for the (somewhat) older fans............Stuart Slater. Back in the day we paid the not inconsiderable sum of £750,000 for young Slater. He was a wideman who had burst on to the top flight at West Ham, flopped at Celtic but we were hopeful of a renaissance in blue. Nothing seemed to work for him in a Town shirt. He appeared to try hard but to no avail. I cannot remember what happened to him and fear that the same fate is awaiting Kasey McAteer. That first half yesterday was as poor a performance in an Ipswich shirt as I've seen in a good while. Joe Fairs and David Diamond on Blue Monday match reaction were incredulous if you fancy a watch (equally so about the hapless shark Ivan Azon btw).
It could all be so different for Kasey. He spurned a great chance early in his Town career against Derbt iirc, other misses too, especially Wrexham could have changed the narrative. He's put in a few decent crosses but cr@p finishing from our strikers mean he has yet to record a valuable assist and other than sheer hard running, nobody can see why we have spent a heap of cash on him. It's all so......well.........Stuart Slater.

More like Kat Slater from Eastenders.

Nah, she scored quite regularly from what I remember.

My gripe with yesterday was that despite him looking threatening in the 2nd half his crosses just dont get near his targets and then he goes and blasts the ball at azon when he just needed to guide it to him.

The first half mcateer was dreadful. Couldn't trap a ball. Couldn't pass. At one stage he stood with the ball with 3 town players around him and he didnt know what to do with the ball.

I think he showed something in that 2nd half... that something was that when hes playing the burns role.. it worked better. High. Wide. Get the ball and drive.
No pissing about trying to bring the ball inside. No worrying about finding cajuste or nunez in the middle just get wide get high and get the ball into the box.

If he can keep doing that and KM allows him the freedom to do that that crossing accuracy hopefully will get better too.

Sorry meant to reply to the whole thread not this post. My fat fingers!! See below

Don’t think any true Ipswich fan wants him to fail. In fact, I’d say it’s the opposite.
It certainly felt like that at Millwall where most people, me included, were willing him to do something.
Yes, he got stick for the first half chance where he delayed too long and didn’t get a shot away but so did Philogene a bit later.
I’ve been critical of McAteer’s quality, not his work ethic, because to put it bluntly it’s been bang average since day one.
The miss at Preston hasn’t been a one-off. It’s been indicative of his finishing. Likewise the cross to Azon yesterday that was hit with too much power. These are not isolated incidents.
As I say, the majority of fans do want him to succeed but that does not make him immune from criticism. The same goes for any player. And don’t forget he’s probably picking up sums of money that you and I can only dream of.
People talk about scapegoats but he is not being unfairly questioned. Likewise Muric last season. Fans are entitled to an opinion even if it differs from that of the club or others.
No one wants Ipswich to have squandered £8million but the harsh reality is it looks that way at the moment.
My Leicester season-ticket mate cannot believe we paid that much and all the gripes on here about poor touch, not being able to beat someone, very little final product come as no surprise to him.
Of course, McAteer can turn this around but it’s not just down to the fans. That’s a lazy excuse.
It’s down to the player predominantly but if he can show some promise and glimpses of quality, then the fans will get on board.
At least it felt like that in the away end yesterday.

Very true. Mind you, Slater could control the ball.
