If you have the chance, visit Langemark:

I hope you found it interesting, Frimley. It’s a fascinating and sobering area. The anppalling events there are beyond human imagination really.

I’ve not been to the museum though - was it interesting?

Hi Churchman. I did. My wife and son both were taken in by it all

The museum was ok. Not the biggest and I wouldnt say alot in it but worth the visit if doing the Ypres tour as it helps link things together

The cathedral there btw is amazing.

Few days time we are doing D day tour when we port in cherbourg.

DDay tour? Oh my, I envy you! You enjoy it! Enjoy is not really the right word, but you know what I mean.

I’ve been around Ypres using guide books and in the Cloth Hall etc. Driving round I could match what I could see to views from German rangefinders etc but not as much as I’d have liked. It’s really hard to read the ground which is why a tour is a good thing.

Tyne Cot cemetery is on Passchendaele Ridge not far from Ypres and is the largest British and Commonwealth cemetery in the world. It’s beyond sobering. All ages, regiments, religions etc.

Went there with my father many years ago. His father fought there in 1917.

If you look carefully, can see the rebuilding in the centre, how low the original, ruined walls ended up.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

You can indeed. It’s one of those places where you look and can’t quite believe what happened there but know that it did.

Ive been a few times. I took my mum there about 20 years ago. And showed her round, including the cemeteries and it was one of the most rewarding things I ever did with her. My mum’s father served on the western front 1916/17.

The irony was that we didn’t know that he’d actually served a little further south in the Somme, Albert, Armentieres area - but she’d passed away before I discovered that, not that it mattered. She saw the western front, which had always fascinated her after her dad’s experiences and how to an extent it defined his life.

The sheer scale of that conflict was staggering.

Tyne cot was incredible. To see two bunkers still remaining ( the third was there to which I understand was the control tower thats been built over but an original wall is still viewable. Couldn't obviously go on the bunkers but still an amazing site.

They recently refurbished in Ypres a monument where the coached stopped. There was a solider stature donated to Ypres by a UK couple. Massive thing it was I believe its going back soon.

When i was there there was a male choir singing "Birdsong" whilst people laid wreaths. The echo from the choir was quite something. Brought a tear to my eye.

I highly recommend reading these autobiographical books by Henry Williamson (author of Tarka The Otter) - who served at Loos, the Somme, etc - 1914 to 1918, and survived.

How Dear is Life covers the period 1913-1914
A Fox Under My Cloak 1914-1915
The Golden Virgin 1915-1916
Love and the Loveless 1916-1917
A Test to Destruction 1918

if you can get hold of them - they are out of print, but usually available on alibris.co.uk
