I think we got drawn into the game they wanted to play 06:11 - Jan 25 with 372 viewsmuccletonjoe

As a result we never got going, various players never got into their stride , notably Hirst and especially Egeli , who was moved to the number 10 position second half, and hardly touched the ball.. Games like that happen, we have seen them before and no doubt will again before the end of season. Important thing now is to get back on track next week and move on. The injury list will be shorter and maybe a few lessons learnt yesterday

They did a job on us and deserved the win. They didn't give us a second on the ball in midfield. A bit like Birmingham, first game of the season.

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

Not seen it back yet but O’Shea certainly infers that. If you were Sheffield U that’s precisely what you’d want. It happens, but the trick is not to allow a repeat. We have better players than these teams. Coventry proved that but against literally anyone you have to earn the right to prove it and play your way, especially in a muck and bullets division like the Championship.

Your last two sentences are spot on.

A disrupted team lacking our usual fluency, made worse by a hard-pressing and tight-marking opponent, with the latter very quick on the break and happy to bypass our high press by going route-one.

Symptomatic of that was how deep Jack Clarke ended up playing most of the game, because we were not able to get the ball through to him in the usual forward left position. He was thus rarely within shooting range.

Which is a long-winded way of saying we badly missed Nunez' energetic link-up play. That is simply not Szmodics' game, even if he is playing in nominally the same position. Not sure it is Egeli's, either, tho that may be down to age, experience and still finding his feet.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

We needed one of those early chances to go in, before Sheff U got into their stride. Once they did, they smothered us in midfield. An old fashioned 4-4-2 with wingers that can invert and help break things up can still be effective apparently. But with 4 attackers we should have had enough outlets to pose more questions. Definitely not the game for Walle Egeli, the enigma that he is. Burns would have been much more effective, but I get the need not to overplay him. Szmods can move on, it will never happen for him with us. Assuming Nunez is still out, Mehmeti starts next match.

Mehmeti should have started took the game to them in his cameo,
Had he started with Clarke our taking the game to them would have been so much better,
Hirst and eglie should not start away from home,

Yes, from the brief cameo, Mehmeti seems to have a similar link-up mentality to Nunez.

Whereas Szmodics is more about crashing through defences, causing trouble.

The problem yesterday was that we couldn't get the ball to our forward line. Tight marking and cut-outs stopped the flow. So Clarke and Egeli dropped deep, with Szmodics and Hirst very isolated.

I think you're spot on with your earlier post, but for me the problem yesterday was that our forwards gave the ball away far too much, especially in the first half. I have been a Hirst fan since he joined the club, but yesterday on many occasions he received the ball from Walton or a defender (we were noticeably more direct than in the home games of late) and he passed it to a red shirt. This handed the initiative to United and left our midfield overrun and chasing shadows.

We certainly missed Nunez. Hopefully Mehmeti can fill in and link up in a similar way.
