West African travel advice 18:30 - Jan 27 with 638 viewsDaninthecampo

I got some good advice last time so let's try again.
Looking at going to The Gambia and Senegal in December, has anyone been and can recommend any must see places / activities?
Also any other W African countries recommended by anyone, which isn't too dangerous that I should consider?
Thanks

You looking to travel or just hit a spot and relax?

For the former, there are overlanding companies that operate in West Africa which would be a hell of a trip. 3 week minimum, best time is the spring before the rainy season.

If relaxing, plenty of tour operators sell packages to Gambia. There is a whole sex tourism thing going on, German grannies with young lads on their arms.

Independent travel, Ghana is pretty cool. Stayed at Labadi beach though the posh hotels have shot up in price as oil execs / workers seek accomodation. Real shame as you could get 5* accomodation for under $70 a few years back, was 5 times that last time I checked.

If you do Ghana then Elmina is lovely too. Really cheap resorts there for silly money ($25) private room looking onto the ocean. Coconut grove my fave, but this was 20 years ago so might have changed.

Freetown in SL was a popular spot with amazing beaches, not been but know many who did.

My favourite convo with the local law enforcement...

Lagos plod. Stop, traffic violation, illegal u-turn.
Me. Fair cop
Plod. You must accompany to the police station
Me. No problem. I have committed a crime, I must pay my debt to society. You lead the way and I will follow.
Plod. But, but I don't have a car
Me. Get it and I'll give you a lift.
Plod. But, but, wouldn't you rather just give me a bribe?

Got her down to 50p which I was quite chuffed with (from £50)

We did a 10 week overland from Nairobi to Jo'burg years go, was amazing! but will only have about 2 weeks spare and it has to be December.
We'd travel independently with a little bit of chilling but mostly travelling.
I've heard good things about Ghana and will aso check out SL
Thanks
Based on your name are you in still in Lagos?

Based on what you say, I think Ghana would suit you. A week in Accra and a week in Elmina.

There are slave forts at Elmina which are proper harrowing.

Easy to get to in terms of Visas.

If you are really advernturous Togo and Benin easily accessible from there too.

Left Nigeria in 2015, now a man of leisure :-)

I went to Zaire once, not that I'm recommending it. Worked in a place called Banana City, which wasn't really a city, and to be truthful I didn't see any bananas. Via Lisbon and Kinshasa, the final leg on a Douglas DC3 with no door.

It was a long time ago.....

So RyanAir then

I flew to Benin city once, plane had no functioning heating/cooling for the cabin so the pilot flew just above the trees, opened his window and gave us all some fresh breeze.
