Assuming that's come from the Ashton side of things, it feels a rather pointed statement. Definitely not the usual 'collective responsibility' attitude that should prevail in this sort of situation.

I don't interpret that statement negatively. To me it suggests. 1. Kieran didn't think that a lot of the possible targets would improve the team. 2. He did think that some were worth pursuing. Let's not start blaming people in what is always a difficult window.

The club wanted that message to go specifically out.
