I assume that the player was deemed to have “ feinting to kick the ball once the kicker has completed the run-up”. For that to become effective, does the penalty have to be actually taken ?
The ref was Darren Drysdale.

Rightly so. There's too much messing about allowed with penalty kicks.
The taker is effectively inducing the goalie to give away which direction he intends to dive. No longer a fair contest.
There were whistles after the referees whistle and think the player had thought the ref had blown up. The ball hadn’t been touch so should’ve got the chance to go again really.
