Performance. Captain. Manager. Away Support. Play-off Jeopardy. Boro. Swansea. 11:42 - Feb 25 with 1285 viewsunstableblue

A few musings:

1) I thought that first half performance was superb. Dominant. Our passing was sharp with the press spot on. 60% possession. 4 corners. 5 shots. 196 accurate passes. Truly impressive. Interesting that McKenna sights the pitch as allowing out close passing game to prosper - it really did.
2) OShea was excellent last night, incredible running, energy, long distribution. And goal saving closing at one point. Overall he’s had a strong season. Thought the criticism over Wrexham, didn’t reflect his overall contribution this term. There were strong performances all over the pitch, Azon, Neil, Greaves, Walton, Clarke… but Matisuwa was next level. What a signing. Of course need to mention Nunez, was really surprised Mehmeti made way, he was next level at Derby. But Nunez not only presses well, he just open up our play.
3) A thread on here after Saturday had +28 likes for someone agreeing with Wrexham fans that Town are over coached! Have a look at how many players have been great successes after leaving Town. And then have a look at how well we were set up last night, yes Watford were pretty poor, but our players knew the plan and executed it. I’m what for me was a MUST win game.
4) Positive to hear the away end backing the team - and singing Egeli and Hirst names, can only help them find form. Egeli is a talent. Just needs some confidence.
5) Wrexham were excellent Saturday, I thought Town actually two strong spells in that match. Wrexham now on a roll. Someone else will end the season strongly like them. Not a good season to hit the play-offs in my view. Avoid.
6) Boro now in wobble territory. But is won’t last. Need to strike now, and get points on the board. Come on the Blades tonight. But I do think Coventry will now stay the course.
7) Swansea needs a statement win and performance - start the run.
Finally get the Portman Road faithful engaged in the season.

I thought the pitch looked really good on some of the closeups so good to see McKenna acknowledge it

I wish I could come over for the Swansea one, but we’ve got an event on. It’ll be tougher than last time we played them. Hopefully we should have more than enough though. They’ve got a bit of an issue at right back, so Clarke could have a field day, much as he did over here. And we know what happens if we can keep the ball on the floor and turn Burgess onto his right foot, so maybe I’d start with Azon.

They struggle to score goals; O’Shea and Kipre (I’d go with him) just need keep Vipotnik quiet. Their biggest threat is probably their energy in the midfield. They won’t let us rest on the ball and have much more energy in the middle than when we played them last, so we need to keep the passing snappy.

Great post ... my only issue is that you didn't give Nunez a shout out. Tired in the second half but his first half performance was superb.

Agree on a lot of that Unny. O'Shea had an absolute stinker against Wrexham and I'm sure he would be the first to admit it. It happens though, it's a shame people can't recognise that without defaulting to the ridiculous hyperbole we see nowadays from drop him to pub player and all sorts of bobbins in between. He's having a very good season, he would walk into every side at this level and we're lucky to have him.

The over coaching thing is just a nothing statement. Ironic that it followed a 5-3 defeat as well where if anything a bit more coaching and control looked in order.

I'm remaining open minded on point 4. Delighted for Egeli last night and do feel he's a very young man having to adjust to a massive step up by way of physicality, technical ability, speed of thought, alongside the off the field and emotional adjustments being away from home. Its not easy at any age, sure isn't at 19. Whether he proves to be a talent worth what we paid remains to be seen, but for now people just need to let him crack on and get behind him.

OShea has strong ratings from FotMob through the season. And has clearly had a good season, and for me showing greater leadership on the pitch. There are no posts that I can see praising what was an excellent performance last night. Yet everyone was quick to throw him under the bus after his ‘errors’ at Wrexham. Yes he had a poor game by his standards - do think it was a worldie from Moore and Walton more at fault. But it’s just the way the fan base are ready to flip to the negative this season. It’s feeding through to the players.

The Wrexham defeat was a player sloppiness and lack of energy, and a failure to stick to the plan/shape. The overcoaching thing as you say is just a nothing statement. But it got a huge number of likes! Again summing up this schism in the fan base.

Think Egeli is struggling with the physicality of the Championship and that right sided role having a lot of tracking back to do. He’s clearly a talent, maybe he suits the Prem more. But he does need to be more confident, and cut out the turnovers in some of his loose passing. I get why people question his transfer, but he’s an investment and fans need to back him. He’s young.

Overcoaching exists, it's not a KM thing specifically, it's pretty wide spread. The " system " seems more important than anything these days. I started watching football in 1963, there is a marked difference. Coaches all come out of pretty much the same place, learn the same things. The clever ones adapt to fit their own ideas. I don't think players who have been in the game for years really need much telling what they should or shouldn't be doing.
