'Things got even worse last week. When the Trump administration demanded that AI companies give the Pentagon unrestricted access to their technology – including for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons – Anthropic, the company behind ChatGPT’s main competitor, Claude, refused.

The retaliation was swift and extraordinary. Trump ordered every federal agency to stop using Anthropic’s technology. Secretary of war Pete Hegseth declared the company a “supply-chain risk to national security”, a designation normally reserved for Chinese firms such as Huawei. He announced that anyone who does business with the US military is barred from working with Anthropic. This is essentially a corporate death sentence, for the crime of refusing to help build killer robots.'

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

Anthropic by StokieBlue 28 Feb 8:13
Good stuff from Anthropic, they have refused to remove or relax the safeguards built into Claude for the US government and military. In response they have had all their contracts cancelled and the government has told all it's contractors they can't use Claude either.

OpenAI have stepped into the gap claiming they have the same safeguards but this seems unlikely otherwise why would the government and military want them? They are desperate for cash though given the extreme levels of their investments to try and kick-start AI.

As a general point, with regards to coding I was sceptical of these agents but I have actually been very impressed with Claude after using it this week. If you have experience and already know what you want to do and pretty much how you want to do it then it can save a lot of time.

OpenAI and especially Altman are looking worse every day.

I've been doing a lot of recruitment recently and many of the applications were clearly written by AI (mostly absolute junk; someone fed the person spec into an AI machine and it just chucked out random bullet points like 'Aligns with [organisation name]'s values').

A couple of people even used it to write their emails to us, which was a big red flag; if you can't even be bothered to write a three paragraph email yourself, do you have the drive to do a full-time job?

To add some balance, a LOT of companies use AI to filter applicant CVs, imagine spending hours on a CV and a bespoke covering letter only for them to never reach human eyes...

I guess you're talking about "just out of university" applicants, or is this a problem across all ages?

There is a debate in the work winning industry at the moment where a lot of clients use AI to mark submissions, even if just as a first pass - at what point does the AI mark submissions written by AI more favourably because they are looking for the same key words etc. and at what point are you disadvantaged if you don't use it?

My daughter had her latest job application rejected as being AI generated - she had spent most of the day writing it long hand before typing it up. It is completely soul destroying for young people at the moment - putting hours into research, writing, editing, being creative, clearly ticking all the requirements boxes just for an instant rejection, time and time again...

My daughter has been doing lots of applications, she wrote her cover letter herself but used CGPT for a spelling and grammar check and duplications which I see as fine (checking work isn't a bad thing) but she's worried she's missing a trick as we know AI is filtering these things.

She's desperate to get to a physical interview, but I've no idea on how she gets a leg up. Is AI going to filter AI favourably? Is a human letter with faults better or worse? Faults aren't a good thing for me, so I don't know.

She's at the point where she's prepared to walk into a work place and give them 6 months free so her CV has experience (she's only 18).

Tough world out there now.

I’ve been applying for jobs recently and LinkedIn - amongst others- has an AI function that tells you how likely you are to be considered for a role based on your experience and qualifications. It’s hilarious. I’m apparently a ‘top applicant’ for any number of jobs that I wouldn’t have a clue how to do.
There’s also a function that writes a cover letter for you. It makes W@nkrrnomics look like the campaign for plain English. I couldn’t in all good faith allow myself to be represented in that way.

The problem here is the need to include the relevant ‘key words’ in order to get through AI filters. The whole experience has reinforced my dislike of LinkedIn. It’s a cesspool of bullsh!tters and recruiters that routinely ghost you.

I now have a new job and I’m desperately hoping that it’s my final appointment before retirement in 5 or so years time.

Does that actually work?!

Had always assumed it's a myth.

It tended to be some of the more experienced people using it tbh. The roles I was recruiting to weren't for new grads. One of the people using AI to write emails was in their 50s.

We review all the applications ourselves - two people go through all of them and score people against all the criteria in the person spec. It's painful (we had 26 candidates for one post and 28 for another) but I wouldn't want to use AI for that sort of thing.
