What was the assistant ref doing. You'd think one of the officials would pick it up

Lino's have stopped making decisions after they renamed them assistant refs

I believe their role depends on the ref. Some refs ask them not to make decisions other than offside to avoid and potential clash with the ref’s decisions (which would wind the players and crowd up). Others let them call decisions and the ref holds off for a sec and follows their lead if he thinks it’s for the Lino’s to call. I saw some ref talking about it once in features somewhere. Linos who only raise their flag after the ref has made a decision make sense when you know that. It’s not that they haven’t seen an infringement, it’s just that they’ve been told to follow the ref’s lead. Not letting the lino call decisions they’re better placed to make is the sign of an insecure ref imo.

Yeah ive been convinced that was the case for a while, as linos very rarely seem to make their own decisions thesedays, even when they've a better view. Made me smile how quickly the West stand lino ran to protect the ref at the end of the game, fastest he'd run all game, whilst the cobbold side guy just ambled over.

I maintain that the modern game requires four assistant referees; two on each side of the pitch. How can one linesman make consistently accurate and reliable calls on incidents that could happen up to half a pitch away from them?

Linos are basically ornaments now. They wait future ref before flagging anything. [Post edited 8 Mar 0:07]
