Why is uk football mostly boring ? 21:56 - Mar 13 with 246 viewseddiespearitt03

Momentum going forward then suddenly stops and passes it backwards.
Getting the ball to the flank ready for a cross, only to pass it backwards.
In a position to shoot or the ball set up for a shot on goal, once again the hesitation and negativity.

Having wasted journeys to away games i feel championship to League Two football is mostly negative.

Tonight i struggled to watch some of the Wrexham v Swansea game and a part of the Colchester 0-0 bore draw.
What has happened to our national game ? It used to be far more entertaining.

I think that best describes the over-coached thing people were talking about on here the other day. The players are so conditioned to play in a way that statistically produces the better outcome. Recycling possession backwards is seen as preferable to a riskier ball and losing possession. It’s a bit like the percentage golf principle (don’t take risky shots).

Yeah, it makes for boring and predictable play. It’s formulaic and all out of the same training manual.

Like it or not, it's the way to win (more often than not). There's a reason all teams do it, because it's the best way to keep balance between attack and defence.

And the underlying reason is that football is too important now. It's no longer just entertainment, it's pressure (from the stands and also social media), the money involved, expectation etc.

Same reason VAR exists and the same reason players openly cheat.

But is it? If everyone’s playing the same way, that way is going to be more successful. I’ve forgotten the team, but there was an excellent video about a foreign side who have completely ripped up the training manual and are playing unpredictable patterns of play. They’re flying.

I was at the Colchester game. The most interesting things about it were...

1. Sizeable groups of Odense fans, 1 Union Berlin fans and a busload of Americans. The Danes and the Germans were on long football weekends.

2. Crawley defended a whole series of corners in a 5-minute period towards the end of the game. Crawley left three players on the half-way line for all of them. Made the corners very much more interesting, because any hacked clearance would have spelt big trouble for Colchester. Nice to see a manager do this, and stick to it through a whole series of corners.
