There is a peculiarity in professional football that receives surprisingly little attention, yet once noticed, is almost impossible to ignore. Watch any training session at a top club and you will observe grown men, paid handsomely to be in peak physical condition, running, passing and shooting whilst wearing three-quarter length shorts. Come Saturday afternoon, those same players emerge from the tunnel in the regulation kit, wearing shorts of an entirely different length.
One has to ask a straightforward question: why?
The purpose of training, surely, is to replicate match conditions as closely as possible. Every touch, every sprint, every change of direction in a session is preparation for the real thing. The kit a player wears is not a trivial matter. It affects how the fabric sits against the skin, how freely the leg moves and, perhaps most importantly, how familiar and comfortable the player feels in their own body when it counts most.
Imagine a professional golfer spending the entire week before a tournament practising with a borrowed set of clubs, only to switch to their own on the day of competition. The idea would be met with disbelief. A golfer's relationship with their equipment is considered sacred, and rightly so.
Yet in football, this inconsistency is accepted without question.
It may seem a small thing. In all likelihood, the players themselves give it no thought at all. But in a sport where margins are everything, small things have a habit of mattering rather more than anyone expects. |  | | |  |

There are many things I don't understand about the modern game. The big one for me is why players put their arm up as if asking to be excused before taking free kicks/corners?
it is daftest when a couple of players are lining up a free kick, say a left footer or a right footer, so the defence doesn't know which one, but then the kicker sticks his arm up and gives the game away.

Don't you think that the tightness of the garments on their legs in training is very different to that with no kickback. Hence when they shoot in training there have to give it a bit more Welly to counteract this? This may prove why we have lots of shots flying over the bar?
