We let the game slip from us 06:58 - Mar 22 with 895 viewsmuccletonjoe

Second half , yesterday , I dont agree that Millwall came up with any tactical masterstroke from their manager. They upped their game came at us with a 4 man press on goal kicks and were much more on it in midfield , which prevented us from counter- attacking at speed. I think our nous for these kind of things needs to be far better. Its as if we don't know what is happening.
We were one nil up. Destroy the game , take time over free kicks , throw ins, have the physio on , go through the whole list to stop them getting any momentum , protect your lead , we have to be much more streetwise. We ended up completely under the cosh and were lucky to come away with the point. Its not always about going toe to toe with the opposition. More than one way of winning a game.

Yes but the bad news for you and the other weirdos who can’t wait for us to fail is yesterday was a good result and we now have promotion in our own hands. I’m sure there will be some twists and turns in the run in though so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to gloat!

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

So the fact that Alex Neil says he took a gamble and changed the formation is not true?

Putting an extra man up front and pushing their midfield further up to nullify our control from the back just “happened”.

It all must to be down to failures of Ipswich players and management.

I never said it didn't happen , what i said was we could quite easily have stopped it having the effect it had on the game. I am well aware of what they did.

You also said their change prevented us from counter attacking at speed, but the game I was at saw us break quickly 4 or 5 times only to be let down by a poor final pass when the right choice would have put a player through on goal.

The fact is that while the second half was not as good as the first due to the way that Millwall setup, we failed to capitalise on the space left in midfield by the Millwall changes due to individual errors and poor passing on the break.

And a bit entitled. Sure, it wasn't a masterstroke but no one said it was. Classic case of making something up to argue against and have a moan when we're a bit crap.

I agree they got a bit lucky, mainly because we executed all our attacks so poorly. You make your own luck though and credit to Neil and Millwall (makes me grimace even writring that) :)

Exactly. Neil's second half strategy wasn't risk free, but he had to try something. With some better passing or composure, we could easily have scored on the break, but I was impressed with how Millwall kept pushing at 1-1 rather than sitting back & trying to time-waste to a draw.

Couldn’t agree more, actually made for one of the better games from a competitive aspect I have seen at PR this season.

No. The fact is , if we had come out double aggressive after having scored ar the end of first half and protected lead, we would not have conceded in the first five minutes and changed the whole game. It was hardly a surprise them coming at us.

Absolutely right.

I keep hearing that Lord of the Rings cast member Neil out coached and out thought McKenna. No he didn’t.

If the Hobbity one was such a genius, why did he set his team up in the way he did second half in the first half? Was he asleep at the wheel or out coached? Neither.

The simple truth is that Millwall started with a plan of playing what we have we hold first half. Cautious, compact, bullying, one up front. For their trouble they were played off the pitch in every aspect. 2-0 or 3-0 would have reflected how it was.

So what does Neil do? Keep the same and pray for rain or take a risk? Keep the same, he knows they’re going to lose. Push up, two upfront, press hard meant they were still likely to lose but it would give them a chance.

And so it did. We struggled with their physicality, they picked up any loose stuff and did what they do well. But on the break we should have scored another goal or two. They were ripe for that but we just didn’t get it right and take advantage..

The shattering defeat (as the dismals on here clearly see it) was down to us not exploiting the gaps Millwall left us second half as much as anything Gnome Neil did in a game where we did more than enough to win by half time.
