1. Much better than many people will think or remember. They don't make telly like that anymore (and the remake is going to be awful if it happens...)
2. McShane is a damned good charismatic actor. Do we have genuinely charismatic actors anymore?
3. Makes me want to move back to East Anglia.
4. The whole binners thing about a town scarf coming out of the bin, is bollix. The episode in question featured a dodgy binman with a Town baseball hat (the same as one I used to own, but amost never wore).
5. Phylis Logan back then...... sigh.

It was a really enjoyable series that has stood the test of time. It was much better than the Jonathan Gash books on which it is based. They were mot the best books but fortunately the series ran and ran in its own direction.

The casting was brilliant and of course the settings were great

The episode you refer to and our budgie friends picked the term binners off was called Bin Diving. The boss of the dustcart was Brian Nunn played be Warren Clarke. In addition to the job, they felt they had the right to any valuable stuff chucked away. It was called scratching and any one else rummaging as Eric was caught doing at the beginning of the episode were called bin divers.

Brian was a bin man who’d made a lot of £ out of it but had a bit of a social conscience helping Lovejoy catch a couple of thieves who’d pinched a vulnerable lady’s most valuable possessions. And this is where the budgie boys get it wrong. Yes, Brian wears an ITFC hat doing his rounds, but he’s actually the hero of the episode. Dead funny too.

Phyllis Logan - an agreed sigh. She played the character of Lady Jane Felsham. My ancestors actually lived in Felsham Hall! No, not that one. That’s in Essex as it goes. The ancestral pile is in fact a large farmhouse in Felsham near Stowmarket. Farmhouses in the good old days were often called Halls. But I can dream!

As for East Anglia and Suffolk. It’s a lovely part of the world. I hope you who live there permanently appreciate it. Luckily my sis and I have kept the parents house in Suffolk so I get to spend time there, not just at football matches. I’ve always loved the area and always will.

Yeah it was great.

I worked for a bloke on site and he modelled himself on Lovejoy so we called him Lovejoy

The countryside was beautiful back then, now sadly many villages are being over built on.

But yes the program was smashing.

I must admit I can’t walk past a skip and not have a trunk in it.

My uncle was in an episode they filmed in 1985. Bit when Lovejoy is in the cafe with Eric. He's the young bloke at the back having a cuppa, his 'mate' is having an ancient-looking can of Tango. He earnt £40 for that.
