I made the point yesterday on another post, he's had his critics but has done well covering for Leif at LB and yesterday on the right. Ok he doesn't have the pace of Burn's but he provided an outlet yesterday when required, defended when he needed to. A solid performance without being spectacular.

Bit like the Birmingham game, I didn't feel he got the credit he deserved.

Like a new signing, odd how little he's been used, often missing out in the matchday squad altogether. Was fairly decent last season, away games in particular.

Seemed to be up for the battle as well yesterday which was nice to see.

Maybe his versatility is a problem, can't be many who can move from left back to right sided forward player.

Basically a perfect squad player. Seems to have a good attitude despite not playing much at all and has come in and played really well.

Just as solid reliable players do, never get the headlines, but teams, not just ours, are usually worse off without one or two. Ben Johnson was decent in the PL for WHU, didn't see enough of him for us there. It should come as no surprise. Can also play in midfield too. Saw him put in a MOM display there for WHU 2 seasons ago.

Massive fan of him. Always reliable, versatile and plays with a smile on his face. You can tell he's a well liked member of the dressing room.

He’ll be ideal for Saints away to shore up the right side

Considering we are in a position where we don’t need to be perfect and just need to get positive results combined with heavy away schedule I’d be using him plenty from here on out. McAteer can be relief for Burns, assuming Wes is fit soon.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Given his West Ham time, I was expecting a lot more from him than him being an adequate backup in the Championship. That’s not a criticism of his recent performances, as they’ve been solid. Just that I’d have expected a bit more than solid. But then as he’s been used as a utility player is probably unfair to expect him to impact games on the ball in the way a natural winger would (or even Leif for that matter). Ultimately we’re lucky to have that sort of strength in depth, yet you’d have thought he’d be a nailed on starter dropping down a level.

If we get promoted, I reckon we will hang on to him because he showed last season that he could do the job in those games where we thought it necessary to play him in a similar position to Saturday.

I felt when the teams were announced that it was a bold and clever move to effectively put a winger in who's a very capable defender in there useful for corners etc. They had loads of corners but none were close. Kudos to KM, and to BJ of course. Perhaps we'll see that again in a few games coming up. But how many RWs do we have?? I fear we'll be losing Burns in the summer, something I'm not looking forward to.

Was never as bad as some made out. In the premier league he didn't look great but so did most if not all our players.

Pleased for him and a very useful squad player who can play a number of positions.

I think KM saw how Birmingham targeted our right hand side and decided that we’d need to be solid at the outset,

Johnson's improved since last season. Seems to have lost a bit of weight and is more mobile. Still v little pace, and wouldn't trust him at full-back vs quick wingers in the Prem, but he has undoubted quality on the ball, slick short-passing, and first-touch. Decent engine now too. Vying for second choice behind Burns at right-10 when everyone is fit IMO. That's still a position we need to improve if we go up.
