| Been very rewarding to see this new side grow over the season on 22:35 - Apr 22 with 1447 views | ITFC_Essex | The problem really is we are weak on the right, while McAteer has come on in recent weeks he's still behind what we needed for the season. This was why we signed Ogbene but he wasn't good enough either, Egeli was overpriced for what he offers on that side too. Had we recruited better there we'd have done so much better. Burns, who we signed for pennies, is still our best option when fit. The same with our front options, we started the season again with Ali on the books, and we recruited Azon who's done okay but isn't really a poacher, and Akpom has been miles off it, leaving it to Hirst, who has had some nasty injuries, to be our main forward. We really needed a quality 2nd division striker to come in, even if just for the season. We also needed better cover for Azor and another centre half to help cover that area. I mean we did want to keep Wolfenden, Burgess and Axel T, but they all wanted out and we couldn't replace them. We might have been better keeping Humphreys as an option rather than having an unfit Cajuste still on the books too. | |

| Been very rewarding to see this new side grow over the season on 22:39 - Apr 22 with 1394 views | urbanpenguin | I didn't think we were very good tonight. Not that I hugely care as every game is now a fight and the points are most important. But there were countless very simple stupid decisions that would be deservedly punished in the Premier League, or even by an average Championship team. | | | |

Was a weird one, we put together some great moves, some of the best of the season, but we looked nervy and gave the ball away cheaply so many times.

Respectfully disagree. Thought we had total control of the game. They were always going to put a lot of balls in towards the end as they couldn't play through us but thought we were organised and stood up well. Thought the move for Furlong's goal was vintage us.

This. Also probably McAteer’s best game, his form is turning at the right time. Add the beast that is Furlong and continued growth of Taylor. Jaden delivering again from the pressure spot despite him not being at his best early in the game. Unlikely standouts, promotions are built this way, not everyone is standout every week, you get that in some games, but as long as several step up it is usually the difference.

I completely disagree that we’ve learnt from mistakes. On the contrary their goal was all too familiar. Plus we started slowly yet again. Up front we were poor with Azon guilty of missing a very easy chance. I can’t see how we have grown at all. The previous promotion winning side. Absolutely. This one. Nope.

Unbelievable. You’ve watched us for the season and you can’t see how we’ve grown?? I think we can safely ignore your footballing opinions then. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Been very rewarding to see this new side grow over the season on 07:30 - Apr 23 with 739 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | I have to say I disagree - we are still incredibly inconsistent away from home (this is off the back of a turgid performance away to Pompey). We only had a good 45 mins yet again, first half was pretty poor with basic passes constantly going astray. Lots of possession without creating huge amounts , and outperforming our xg. We are just an okay team in my opinion, and even neutrals (supporters of other teams) I’ve spoken to have been unimpressed when seeing us on TV. Home form has been bvery strong this season, but in all honesty I can’t say we’ve made huge progress away from- we’ve had quite a number of mediocre showings. | | | |

Don't agree. Anyone who knows football knows we controlled the game. The fact that w did it after an early mistake shows character and calmness that maybe wasn't there at the beginning of the season.
| Been very rewarding to see this new side grow over the season on 08:22 - Apr 23 with 590 views | Esseeja | Charlton are the worst team I have seen us face since we thrashed Forest Green 4-0, but make no mistake, play like that against anyone else and we are not winning that game. Usually, Charlton keep games very tight, recently they have hardly conceded more than one goal, but last night, they did absolutely nothing because they were absolutely terrible in every area on the pitch and we still made it hard on ourselves with the misplaced passes and the missed chances, we didn't need to sit back on them at the end, they had nothing. We were 100% below the required standard, we made mistakes in possession during the first phase of build up play, that other teams would have took advantage of. We are very lucky to have faced such a poor team. I cannot believe we let these score 4 goals past us this season. It took McAteer 39 games to become an effective player for us. I still think we get 2nd but we have to be one of the worst 2nd place teams in the championship in a while, I am not convinced by us at all. We have a real fight on our hands against WBA. In my opinion, a much harder game to win than Southampton. The banana skin of all banana skins. I do not mind what happens here as long as we win one or the other. I'm confident we're still getting 2nd. | | | |

'I'm confident we're getting second but I'd still like to dig the team out' Plus why do you think it might have taken time for MacAteer to settle? Any ideas? It's not a video game. Charlton started brightly. Young players trying to make their mark. Good energy but they were never going to be able to keep that press up.
| Been very rewarding to see this new side grow over the season on 08:38 - Apr 23 with 503 views | ITFC_Forever | First half we were very poor… the goal we conceded set the tone. Too many simple passes not going where they should etc. Thankfully Furlong wasn’t having it and got us level, but the best thing to say about the first half is that we managed to be level at half-time. Second half was much better, albeit from a very low base, but not brilliant. It was a clear trip for the penalty and whilst Jaden’s penalty was poor, it went in don’t was good enough. He also drew a good save from the keeper, as did Nunez at the end. As KMc said, it was a good show of character to get through that and come out with three points. Home by 12.15am and on to WBA. £5.50 for a moderately warm sausage roll at halftime. I know… don’t buy food in the ground if you don’t want to be ripped off, but still… | |

It's all about getting the points so fair enough, job done. But with all the time, space and possession, and not really against a low block either, we still didn't create all that much for all the flowing moves up to the final ball. Azon's miss aside not that many clear-cut opportunities that I can remember.

Their bright start is down to the exact criticisms I mentioned that you have a problem with. This is why you discuss those criticisms rather than dismiss them. A better team would have scored a 2nd before we gained control of the game, it shows just how awful Charlton were that we were allowed control after how poor we were at that point in the game.
| Been very rewarding to see this new side grow over the season on 09:13 - Apr 23 with 333 views | TheGentlemanViking | Controlling a game and playing well are not mutually exclusive. For 25 minutes they were relentless in their press, got a cheap goal, and pressured us into a few silly mistakes. We stepped up, took control of the game and won. It wasn't an easy watch, I don't think we can say we played overly well, but we got the job done against a poor side. Results matter, performances don't. That said, my frustration is the variable in our performances, how we can go from one extreme to the other week on week, we've definitely grown in our ability to dig ourselves out of self inflicted holes, I wouldn't say we've grown in the respect of not putting ourselves in them in the first place. 2-1 suggests the game was close but if not for comical finishing from Azon and Nunez it would have been 4-1 and nobody would be questioning the quality of the performance at all. I'll take these kind of games all day if it gets us in the top 2! | | | |
