10 match thoughts from The Valley - story of the season! 23:53 - Apr 22 with 1592 viewsunstableblue

1. The Valley away end is one of the best in my view, stand alone stand from a 3 sider connected stadium. And the Suffolk Army were excellent at times tonight, despite not perhaps being given consistent encouragement from the Town performance.
2. Town looked a little nervy from the start and that immediately resulted in a shocking goal to concede. A calamity. McKenna himself has talked about our weakness in defending the box at times, and that was apparent, as well as of course the cheap turnover upfield.
3. Charlton’s fans suddenly fired up and then they had a further spell. But to be fair to Town they dug in and started to control the game.
4. This season has perhaps been a story of Town looking somewhat disorganised and also not energised and fired up at times. But this may be as a result of the likes of Philogene being really closed down hard.
5. Jaden had a funny game. I think overall he was effective but at times looked lightweight - Sky gave him MotM?! Perhaps for a few of his trademark box hugging runs, and a cheeky (scary) penalty. But he was knocked off the ball too easily, which hasn’t been common of late.
6. Town remained a bit nervy. BUT OShea and Furlong and now Greaves are rocks this season, and perhaps this quality is underestimated, they weathered the storm and were robust.
7. I was so pleased Taylor got the nod tonight. He is key for us. And that yellow inducing robust challenge was a highlight.
8. Beside him Matusiwa was better, not yet back to his imperious best. But he made a difference tonight.
9. OShea was sensational, he’s captain fantastic. The quality of his defending is remarkable at times. Whether Mehmeti nailed his start, I’m not sure. But McAteer continued to build his credentials.
10. I so wish the 3rd goal had been secured, Clarke came close to deserving it. It was a night, just like the season, where we didn’t smash the game, but we pragmatically earnt 3 points.

I’m still convinced a HUGE performance is due. Maybe at the Hawthorns.

Some good points but those Azon and Nunex misses, dear me! Great to finally win from behind away too.

Hope you are right re: WBA, I am going if, we win that then I will I shall be a happy clapper rather than bed wetter. This is the key game for me.

I think one thing Philogene could do with working on is responding to where the refs set the bar for physical contact.

If Jared Gillet had been in charge last night with the bar he set in the game against Boro then pretty much every time Philogene got knocked over he'd have been given a free kick. Last night Madeley had a higher bar and Philogene didn't seem to respond to that. I think he's capable of staying on his feet more (and we've seen that at times).

Nunez was in a crowd and maybe mis sighted

Real shame not to score a third in front of the away end

Both were good moves though

And our defending was resolute in the end

Just great that we came from behind, thought we might fold after the calamitous first goal conceded

Will be interesting to see what Ipswich turns up at the hawthorns

Clarke gave us a lot last night, and overall Philogene had done his work beforehand

1. Good atmosphere, but crap view of the goal line. Couldn't see Jaden's penalty go in.
2. We played nervously for the first 10 minutes. Loads of stray passes.
4. Agreed. We have not played well consistently all season and never for 90 minutes. Now's the time to start.
5. Jaden: I think he's sometimes looking for the foul....
6. Greaves was outstanding.
7. Love Jack Taylor. Better defensively though. Sometimes takes to long or misses his man.
8. Matusiwa: Yeah. Still not up to his earlier form.
9. O'Shea still makes me nervous at times. Mehmeti needs to get his head up. Macateer great again. Neal: jury's out.
10. It would be nice to take all those chances we create wouldn't it? Jack C my POTS.
Saving our best for the last three?

That's where are problem is, chances, makes life a whole lot easier,
For a footballer they were both woeful,
Think our defence is pretty solid but walton makes good saves but then does something daft which I just put down to being a goalie,
