It’s a good result 14:29 - Apr 25 with 1332 viewsSouthBucksBlue

We had to win one of the last three games and QPR at home was always the most feasible. WBA are a well drilled in form side and a draw means the Southampton result is now irrelevant (unless of course we win).

Irrelevant is a stretch. A draw prevents Southampton getting 2nd. A win makes QPR the meaningless result.

I would much prefer to go into the last game with it all done and dusted.

Of course, on paper, QPR is the easier match but football isn't played on paper.

Could care a less about the performance at this stage. I come to expect it away from home unfortunately, was all about getting out of dodge today and ensuring we are 2nd going into the last day.

We should beat QPR and then it’s mission accomplished and a half of this lot won’t be involved next year anyway.

And that's fine. But playing well tends to produce better results over the long term and that's something (not playing well) that worries me about us. I get the good teams can play badly and grind out a result thing, but if we keep on like this next year whatever league we're in it's going to be a grind. And more simply I find watching good football far more enjoyable that attritional football.

It won’t be the same team at all.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I did say assuming we don’t win. Preventing Southampton getting 2nd with a draw has no relevance for us whatsoever.

Yes you’re right if you only look at the table. I don’t see how anyone could watch the game and think we don’t need to improve. It was a poor performance.

I’ve just watched it back. It wasn’t a poor performance. We played a big, powerful, well organised, in form team that needed a point - just look at their crowd’s reaction at the final whistle if you doubt that.

They pressed hard for as long as they could on a hot day. But for about the last 40 minutes they got pushed well and truly back and were hanging on. When they got the ball we took it off them.

We didn’t smash them but in the end they were unable to get out of their half and from our perspective, it was a decent effort for the third time in six days.

As for improving, one always wants that whatever you do in life. Nothing new there. The team gave their best against a strong opponent and had we won it at the end I don’t think too many could have complained. It was a well earned point.

anything that gives us more routes to promotion is relevant, 2 draws leaves us relying on just one result (millwall not to win), loss and a draw leaves us relying on 3.

Unless Boro hit 6!

Truth is, we can't really rely on Millwall not beating Oxford. Of course they might yet fail to but we need to do the business ourselves.

But the point you make is the one I have been trying to make, albeit clumsily. A point against Southampton could still prove crucial for us potentially.
