| Summer squad revamp 11:03 - May 12 with 3743 views | itfcjoe | Out of Contract players: Harry Clarke - take option and sell Wes Burns - Mutual release Conor Chaplin - Release Conor Townsend - Release David Button - Release Cameron Humphreys - Take option and Sell Other players surplus to requirements: Ali Al-Hamadi - Loan/Sell Alex Palmer - Sell Cieran Slicker - Loan/Sell Chieo Ogbene - Loan/Sell Elkan Baggott - Loan Aro Muric - Loan/Sell Sam Szmodics - Loan/Sell Chuba Akpom - Loan/Sell Remaining squad XXX = New signing [Under 21] GK - XXX, Walton, [Gray] RB - XXX, Furlong LB - Davis, XXX CB - O'Shea, Kipre CB - XXX, Greaves CM - XXX, Matusiwa CM - XXX, Taylor RW - XXX, McAteer, [Walle Egeli] 10 - XXX, Nunez, Mehmeti LW - Philogene, Clarke CF - XXX, Hirst, XXX Utility - Johnson This leaves us needing 9 signings to take us up to a 25 man squad, plus potentially another U21 signing which wouldn't count against the cap limit. Someone like Ben Johnson could also go, but his versatility is useful. Nunez and Mehmeti cover a couple of positions each. Would be handy if one of the new CFs could also play an alternate attacking role as well just for an extra bit of versatility Those 9-10 signings will probably end up the thick end of £150m, a massive amount of work to do to get the right quality over the line but those are the positions and roles I'd be targetting | |

| Summer squad revamp on 14:48 - May 12 by tractorboy1978 | Johnson was very useful last time around in the PL. Played that right sided role very well in several away games where we needed more defensive stability. And has that PL physicality/athleticism. Expect we will use him similarly at times next season. |
I dont really disagree he’s done a job when called upon, my point was we need to progress to top talent for our level in all positions and doing ok might be part of holding us back rather than taking us forward. Eg in the past if Davis is injured what if we have another similar attacking left footed left back, or Burns is injured what if we have a Burns style player to step in, or if we want an additional defender as a wing back bring a specialist wing back on that side with power and pace. Either-way, he is under contract and there is probably a space for him in the squad, i wouldnt be upset that he stays, he has not proven to excel in any position but he is a good egg!

| Summer squad revamp on 16:08 - May 12 by surreyblue | I suppose the question is whether 5atb or 3 in midfield makes us a more solid unit - personally I think the latter but there are arguments both ways |
Not far from where we were at times last time different players. If we can secure the quality of player there is probably something there.

| Summer squad revamp on 16:30 - May 12 with 334 views | Muncher | I have it slightly differently: OUT (20 players) • Ogbene • Chaplin • Szmodics • Cajuste • Burns • Akpom • Harry Clarke • Neil • Azon • Baggott • Humphreys • Young • Muric • Al-Hamadi • Johnson • Townsend • Palmer • Slicker (Loan) • Egeli (Loan) • Kipre (Loan) IN (12) Squad GK1 - NEW (first choice) GK2 - Walton GK3 - Button LB1 - Leif LB2 - NEW (competition) RB1 - NEW (first choice) RB2 - Furlong RCB1 - O'Shea RCB2 - NEW (competition) LCB1 - NEW (first choice) LCB2 - Greaves LW1 - Philogene LW2 - Clarke RW1 - NEW (first choice) RW2 - McAteer CM1 - NEW (first choice) CM2 - NEW (first choice) CM3 - Matusiwa CM4 - Taylor 10 - NEW (first choice) 10 - NEW (first choice) 10 - Nunez 10 - Mehmeti Striker - NEW (first choice) Striker - NEW (first choice) Striker - Hirst Egeli may stay but I wonder if for his development he needs more gamete elsewhere. I think we could/should improve upon Kipre if we get a chance to. | | | |
| Summer squad revamp on 16:31 - May 12 with 322 views | itfc48 | Personally, I'm loaning out or selling Mehmeti. Can't see where he fits unless Nunez, Clarke or Philogene move on and even then I'd be looking to aim higher. I don't think he gets his head up enough and he's not good enough to dribble through Prem defences. If we do get an offer for Philogene from Turkey that gets us a bit of profit I'd sell and look to sign someone with a similar profile to Okafor or Nmecha as an alternative to Clarke as that's worked well for Leeds this year. | | | |

I think any good squad has a couple of utility players that can do a job in certain games or cover a few positions - that is Johnson for me. I think Joe's summation of what we need in terms of starters vs backups is pretty spot on to be honest. Most of our new signings need to be better than what we have already got. But you aren't going to go out and sign a £10m+ left back to compete with/sit behind Davis in the pecking order. You have to hope he can play in 90%+ of the games and then you need someone serviceable to step in when needed - which is what we did with Townsend last time. [Post edited 12 May 16:34]

| Summer squad revamp on 16:20 - May 12 by nick141 | My only comment is that I have a strong conviction that Matusiwa would be good enough for a starting berth. I also think we will keep Jack Taylor - have people not learnt to stop underestimating him?! |
I am not confident that Azor is PL standard. I am however willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see how he gets on. I rate his athleticism and he is a good destroyer but... I am yet to be convinced by him on the ball. I think he gives it away cheaply at times and isn't particularly press resistant. We may not have enough of the ball for that to be exposed... time will tell.
| Summer squad revamp on 17:23 - May 12 with 213 views | strikalite | I'm far more ruthless in very key positions, sadly... Nunez McAteer Mehmeti Hirst Good championship players but simply not good enough for the huge step up.. Or you know this but think we need to keep some identity from this squad and seriously strengthen around it? | | | |

| Summer squad revamp on 14:52 - May 12 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Done the same thread from last week. Agree with most but Kipre isn’t anywhere near PL level for me (guess he might be cover of the cover). Still think LW is very un robust if the deal comes in Clarke we maybe replace one of those as well. So much work to do. Think it’s an area of the club that’s been underwhelming since our first PL promotion. With the amount spent you want more than a few starters and I’m not sure all have held their value. Five starters from league 1 last day against QPR is a good story but also shows missteps. Thank god for Delap and that Hutchinson went for the money he did. The big test will be if Greaves can be a regular (in a new system maybe) and if O’Shea with the right partner can be a really solid PL center half. Playing Davis in a 4 would be suicidal for a promoted side that wants to be more pragmatic, so I am wondering if a system change comes in. [Post edited 12 May 14:52]

As a 4th choice CB Kipre will be fine for me, will have a role to play if under the cosh and just want someone to come on and help see out a game by heading and kicking it. Will struggle to attract anyone better for that role - but like everything means need to get any other CB recruitment bang on to ensure he is 4th choice and stays there! I think LW will be good enough, they got 29 goals between them this season, plus Mehmeti can play out there too - plenty of other areas above that in the list

| Summer squad revamp on 11:50 - May 12 by itfcjoe | He is one of the fittest players in the squad, his running numbers are off the charts. Doesn't have that raw athleticisim, but his fitness will be enough in that regard |
Nunez running numbers, are you referring to distance or speed? Always felt he was a bit slow off the mark, but does cover lots of ground.

Yeah, 4th choice. I agree about left wing in principle but my concern is they’d be solely sharing the minutes, I think if we had one of them and a new 20M player with more of an athletic/physical profile it would be worth considering. It’s really probably where we hold the most value in the market on the pitch. Would probably sound a bit daft selling your best player but if someone came in for 30-35M for Jaden and then you invested in 20-25M of that in Europe and still had a Jack Clarke behind (who could potentially play more central as well), it might not be outside realms of possibility. Sunderland sold Bellingham and Watson which opened a lot more head room for incomings and wages. Doubt it happens but just an off the cuff thought. Not like they set the world alight last time, a few injuries for Jaden and Villa fairly quickly moved on. BTW this isn’t anti Philogene take I think he’s probably our most talented player.
