He’s a solid championship starter but think we’ve probably moved on from those levels for our backs ups now. Also won’t have played football in a year. With Leif’s style we probably need to spending some cash in that area as we might go horses for courses depending on the opposition, especially away. |  |

I'm with you on him - I've never seen him have a bad game, so I wouldn't write him off but I'd also trust the club's judgement if we chose to let him go, but it seems most here have written him off, I'm just not sure why? |  |

Just a thought on this. If Townsend is not good enough are you going to buy a player to start ahead of Leif ?, if so you are taking a price of over 20/30 Mill. Or if you a looking for a back up that will prob be about 5/10 mill, then you have to add on signing on fees, wages and agent fees. Or do we go with a back up of Townsend/Greaves/ Johnson ?. I myself thought he did a good job for Town when called on. Plus what do we do if we go to a three at the back formation ? |  | | |

I think this is partly due to him playing like he did in that previous promotion season. He's been much more defensive this season. I genuinely think he could do a Bale and play further up the pitch as a left sided forward. |  | | |

I'm inclined to agree. How much would we have to spend, and realistically how much better would they be, to get someone in that won't be a starter and would be happy to come and do that?
That has "Championship" player (or unproven overseas) player written all over it, and I just think if we could add £5m to our "striker kitty" then that's money better spent, and we just keep Townsend as backup. Especially that Greaves can also drop in there and doesn't do poorly. | | | |

He's a very solid Championship defender but he hasn't played for a year and is now 33.
People seem to have forgotten just how big the gap is. Davis wasn't good enough last time out in the EPL for the most part. We need to be looking for an upgrade on our best players and having the likes of Leif as the back up ( yes really ).
If we aren't ruthless in our recruitment and upgrading the team we will get exactly the same result as llast time. That's the harsh reality. |  | | |
