Watching this game, a massive criticism of McKenna throughout the season from the so called “boo boys” was that we couldn’t break down a low block.

We are currently watching the best attacking team in the world struggle to break down a low block. It is just incredibly hard to break down, physically it is almost impossible when there is that many bodies in the way.

And even much further down the pyramid teams are so well coached to keep their shape, etc

Poll: What % of our full potential are we currently playing at?

The ability to organise a defence appears to have become better than the ability to break it down, among modern day coaches. Result? Much more boring football. I'll agree with anyone that says, defending on masse is something of art form in itself, but it's gradually taking over the game and strangling it. I'm just glad I was around years ago when it wasn't so. More modern day coaching for you. Football by numbers.

Arsenal are probably the best defensive team in club world football at the moment.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

An organised defence that sets up not to lose has its place if you’re happy with a point in a vital league game….

Not so great in a winner takes all cup final, if you rely on a penalty shoot out and then arse it up without the opposition keeper having to save any of them.

The amusing thing about that game is, I could have played in goal for PSG tonight and they’d have still won.

It used to great on here when people let me say whatever I wanted and giggled along - (Rough translation of post from un-named TWTD contributor, 2026)

Agree with you. Most modern-day football is sh1te, and the phrases which have come into it are quite simply ridiculous. I don't know what Thora Hird would have made of "Low Block"

I thought the same. Our cadre of haters spent much of the season dishing out stuff like ‘why don’t they play quicker’ or ‘play with pace’ etc? Bit hard to do either if the opposition are camped around their penalty area as Arsenal were for most of the game.

If PSG last night or Man City couldn’t do it against Palace in last years cup final, despite their brilliant players, it’s clearly not easy.

Teams will learn how to unpick it, but I don’t think they have yet.

We will need to learn how to use the so called low block for me far to American sounding. For me sitting deep play on the break its nothing new Italian sides did for years.
We won't have a lot of the ball we will need to break quickly and take our chances.

Now there's a name I never expected to see mentioned in a football thread, or most others for that matter! I dare say she wouldn't have been impressed!. What I'll say here is, if I was a modern day coach ( probably thankfully for the game I'm not, or at least the people in it ) the first thing I'd do after learning the " basics " from the manual, would be to find the nearest bin, dump it and do things my way.

Which is why I've got a lot of time for the likes of Luis Enrique who wasn't going to take the PSG " gig " on originally as he didn't want a side just packed already with big names, he wanted to do it his way. PSG agreed and the first thing he did was ditch the " three amigo's " of Messi, Mbabe and Neymar. I wonder how that turned out? !!!

As for the " Low Block ", ha, was around in the 1960's when I started watching, it was just called playing defensively.

If there's one thing I'd do at Portman Road/Playford Road before almost anything else, it would be to install a Futsal pitch ( or two ). That would teach modern day players far more about technical skill and thinking very quickly in a very fast paced environment than any amount of garbage coaching would do. I'll probably be waiting some time for that! My final plea to modern coaches, dump the manual please guys and girls!

OK - now attacking coaching needs to evolve to come up with strategies for a low block. In some ways you can already see that, with the switch toward set pieces and playing more direct. It's the way of the game, it evolves constantly, which is what makes it the best game in the world. Not that many football fans seem to agree with that these days!

TWTD CP. Evans Out.
Poll: Neil Young or Lynyrd Skynyrd - there is no middle ground.

There is a strategy, it's called moving the ball around quickly. Even PSG with their array of talent fell in to the trap of going side to side, backwards, side to side etc at funeral pace. It wouldn't disturb a sleeping sloth, let alone a well drilled mass defence. I'm all for the game evolving for sure, as long as it makes it a more exciting spectacle, this doesn't. Of course we all know the game is about as much a business as it a sport these days, but it is still labelled as entertainment. There seems to be increasingly fewer examples of such entertainment and people are paying a fair bit to watch it, either in the flesh or from home. Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man, but in this case I'm happy to be one!
