So much for all this global warming,it wasn’t invented back then in the 1970s. My Butts are filling nicely. Have a good day people. [Post edited 2 Jun 6:30]

I wondered who that was waving to me from the pilot seat of the Vulcan. Now that has a beautiful howl!

Good point but when it comes to Farage, what type of Fokker ?

| Humping down in Benters. on 08:46 - Jun 3 by Churchman | The thread is meant to be light hearted. Fun. Why the pile in on the OP? Who are you to decide what somebody believes in or otherwise let alone whether they are ignorant or not if you don’t know them? Is that not being judgemental? Sometimes a light touch or observational thread like this should be is a good thing, in my view. There’s a time and a place to be serious and earnest about stuff. |

Of course in my haste I mistakenly used the name of the Dutch planes (Fokker) when I should have used the name Focke. And for the type of Focke, the natural one for Farage would surely be the CONdor.

Was driving a V6 3.2 Amarok pick up for work last month. Only used it off road but was a beast of a machine [Post edited 5 Jun 10:58]

Interesting history, that company: 'ITT Corporation, which had acquired a 25% stake in the company prior to the war, won $27 million in compensation in the 1960s for the damage that was inflicted on its share of the Focke-Wulf plant by WWII Allied bombing... Colonel Sosthenes Behn, Ludwig Roselius and Barbara Goette outfoxed Hitler in 1936 when he tried to have Roselius removed as a major stakeholder from Focke-Wulf A.G. and reconstitution followed resulting in the privatized company Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau GmbH... Focke-Wulf formally merged with Weserflug in 1964, becoming Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke (VFW), which after several further mergers became the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company N.V. (EADS). EADS was later renamed as Airbus.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Not quite. Anthony Fokker designed aeroplanes for Germany in WW1. The Fokker E3 Eindekker was the first to carry a properly synchronised machine gun to fire through the propeller. He actually tested it himself but refused to prove it’s worth by shooting down an allied aircraft. It soon proved a success, even if the aeroplane itself was average. His next notable design was the famous Dr1 Triplane (actually designed for him by Platz after he’d seen a Sopwith Triplane), as used by Richthofen, Voss and many others. It was slow but highly manoeuvrable with a phenomenal climb rate. Early ones had issues - the top wing used to come off. Not good. Just over 300 were made. The most successful design and arguably the best fighter of WW1 was the Fokker D7, again designed by Reinhold Platz. This was state of the art in 1918 and was flown by a certain Herman Goering when he led the Red Baron’s mob after his death. As for Focke (Focke-Wulf) you have the brilliant Shrike (190), Eye (189), Goldfinch (44) or Condor to choose from!

Not forgetting the pre-war Fw 61, which was the first successful helicopter design with powered rotors.

Indeed it was. Focke-Wulf produced a lot of interesting designs. My favourite will always be the FW190 Dora 9, which test pilot Eric Brown put alongside the Spitfire as the best piston engine fighter of WW2. It looks the absolute nuts too. Interestingly it was only designed as an interim to give the 190 altitude performance before the TA152 became available. Kurt Tank’s basic design of the 190 series was so good that all the 190D required to accommodate the inline Jumo engine was a longer redesigned cowling and a section added in front of the tail to balance the aeroplane out.
