The ones that are well-progressed, but now need the input of a manager.
What happens if the new manager gets in, and decides he doesn't want any of the players on Ashton's short list? It's already happened once this year. Or, indeed, if the player decides they're not a fan of the chosen manager?
It just feels a bit of a weird setup.
I'd assumed that, with deals progressing, we'd moved more towards a 'head coach' style setup, with everything at the club being geared towards a particular style etc., and the coach more likely being tasked to get the best tune out of the available resources.
Otherwise it feels very odd to be getting these deals lined up when we may not even know for sure precisely what the new manager wants. [Post edited 19 Jun 16:09]

Glad I’m not the only one concerned by that. Even from a players perspective, who in their right mind is provisionally agreeing to join a club when they don’t know who the manager is going to be? Are you really joining thinking what’s best for your career or is it agent driven based on the best financial package they can get for their client?
I have no problem with the recruitment team putting a list together of potential targets based on a criteria provided by the manager which he can then later say yes/no to. But to actually have deals lined up when we don’t even know how the manager is going to play or what attributes he’s looking for in a player does seem odd.
I’m guessing it’s a case of this is what the data tells us is successful so these are the players we need and then we need to find a manager to suit that squad and style of play? | | | |

I had always assumed it was this way? Different lists / targets dependent on league and then manager gets the final say.
I'd love to know how it works at the other 19 PL clubs tbh - i can't imagine managers have as much power as they used to, especially with so many changing every season and not tending to stay in post as long as they did before. | | | |
