Viljoen and Whymark were my faves as a 10-12 year old. He just used to slow the game down to his tempo. Sublime passer of the ball in all ranges. Absolutely pulled the strings in midfield with the likes of Talbot and Morris doing the donkey work.

Me too. One that I tried to emulate when a young player in my teens. Wonderful passer of the ball.

Yes, when I started watching Town in 1971, Viljoen was clearly our best player. A shame his Town career ended acrimoniously, with Robson bringing him back for the last league game of the 1977-78 season, with a view to playing him in the FA Cup Final. Viljoen wasn't too popular with his team mates & they made sure this was his last game for Town. [Post edited 21 Jun 16:56]

When he played well it was contagious and the rest of the team played well too. But even on his off days he was magnificent. Happy Birthday Colin. (I saw a picture of him somewhere online earlier today - but I really don't think it was him in the photo. Anyone else see that?)

Ditto. Colin had silky smooth skills and adapted seamlessly to playing with a variety of different partners in midfield, including Danny Hegan and Ian Collard, as well as Peter Morris and Brian Talbot. I remember that he used to do a lot of stretching exercises before kick off, in an era when no-one else did. He was ultimately very unfortunate with knee injuries that were not treated as effectively as they would be nowadays. Thank you for the memories, Colin.

Yes, he was one of those injuries in 77/78 , along with Whymark, Beattie and Hunter, that made that season a struggle. Was he injured much in 76/77? I know Beatties bonfire was costly post Easter, that was a season we were right in the mix.

Good summary. That’s how I remember him. A terrific all round player. 363 appearances, 54 goals. His prime looking at Pride of Anglia was 1967-1975. But stats don’t quite tell the story of how good he was. Robson’s first good side tends to get overshadowed a bit by the events that followed, but it really was a top team. CV was integral to it as well as our early years establishment in Division 1.

I certainly remember seeing and coming close to him (along with a couple of other players: Mick Lambert?) at a cricket match at Ransomes' sports ground in Sidegate Avenue. It must have been around 1975.

Viljoen pretty much missed the 1976-77 season after undergoing achilles surgery. He'd only played 13 times the previous season, presumably because of this injury. He made the field for his testimonial game, but his career was coming to an end. We certainly mugged off Man City when we got £100k for him.
