| Irritable bowel syndrome 19:19 - Jul 3 with 1708 views | TwoKnightsInIpswich | While I'm awaiting a formal diagnosis I'm quite certain I suffer from the above. Any TWTDer's have experience and/or advice on managing and coping with it? | |

| Irritable bowel syndrome on 19:28 - Jul 3 with 1642 views | Ryorry | Not IBS, but have chronic IBD (inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis). You really do need to get yourself checked out by a doctor (edit - sorry, missed that it looks like you already had) as they can present with similar symptoms initially, and the latter is serious, requiring diagnosis and medication. | Irritable bowel syndrome on 19:29 - Jul 3 with 1638 views | steetonblue | Google “fodmap diet”. Other than that, fybogel (not other laxatives) for the bunged up days and buscopan for the crampy days | | | |
| Irritable bowel syndrome on 19:38 - Jul 3 with 1596 views | itfckenty | I've had this since I was about 10, alot of changed over the years, but usually it's several main factors - Food and stress. Those are the two most common reasons it can occur, when I was younger I used to write a diary of every piece of food I ate daily and looked for patterns. Then cut out those foods completely. Some things have changed over the years with food, but stress and anxiety is the killer for mine. Like someone posted, Buscopan can help to a degree, mint tablets are also very helpful! And I used to find pro biotic drinks can also help too. Other than that, not much you can do other than flush it out your system | | | |
| Irritable bowel syndrome on 19:45 - Jul 3 with 1558 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Colpermin has always worked for me. Also, keep a food and flare up diary, see if you can find a trigger. Mine was white bread. [Post edited 3 Jul 19:47]

| Irritable bowel syndrome on 20:45 - Jul 3 with 1386 views | ChalonerC | Main triggers are onions, garlic, lentils, some greens.like brocc, cauli but as others suggest check out Fodmap diet, print out and you get used to eating sensibly.Like many other allergies just let friends know if you eat out. If you do need pain relief, Buscapan is effective. Not a serious condition, after a while, it doesnt affect yr life, just respect your gut. Kefir, yoghurts are also good. | |

| Irritable bowel syndrome on 00:59 - Jul 4 with 1189 views | Blooos | Big difference for me when just eating clean / whole foods compared to processed crap. Beer is generally a trigger for me, after 2-3 I’m in the danger zone.. 😂. Exercise and eat well and makes a big difference | | | |

You can also buy over the counter digestive enzymes that help - a good one is Digestym, but there are some specific kinds to deal with specific food groups - a dietitian would be able to help picking the right one, though there's also plenty of info available on the net if people search.

Interesting to hear someone else mention the rarely mentioned onion problem, I had a severe bowel problem about thirty years ago and was put under the dietician at Addenbrooks. Exclusion diet and food diary routine, nothing but chicken, rice and water for two weeks and then the main culprits were introduced one at a time: nuts OK, phew - cheese OK, phew - chocolate OK, phew...number seven was onions and everything went haywire again. So no more serious curries for me, although I have tried replacing onions with mushrooms but it isn't the same. What I miss even more though is chilli con carné, but the compensation of not being ill for three days every month or so is worth it. As others have said, find your best diet - and get plenty of exercise. Cooking for yourself as much as you can helps too because then you know what goes in your food and you can ensure decent quality ingredients. I can't comment on prescription drugs, over the counter remedies and supplements because I don't need them and I put that down to a reasonable diet and exercise regime.

| Irritable bowel syndrome on 08:23 - Jul 4 with 921 views | Deano69 | I have Crohns and various other related issues. Luckily for the moment I have been able to contain it with a maintenance dose of medication and keeping a fairly well balanced diet and lifestyle. Saying that I had a pretty bad flare up end of last year / start of this year requiring steroids. That was primarily due to not keeping with good practice of diet and moderation. In now struggling with weight and bloating having completed that course and back on the maintenance dose. Minor flares up have since become a bit of a thing such as on a stag weekend (probably enough said), a four day ‘very socially minded’ work conference being such examples. All due to excess alcohol, poor sleep, lack of healthy food (some were self inflicted, some out of my control) Stress is a significant factor, poor sleep, poor diet, alcohol, generally the wrong things in excess will give you problems. There is likely to be trigger foods that make you worse and it can be tricky finding those out. A food and ‘how I feel diary’ seems a bit of a bore but certainly will help identify food groups that may be causing issues. Gluten, dairy, fat-rich, can be good places to start, but I also know people that have issues with broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts, so nothing is clear cut. I try not to let it rule my life, but as mentioned, have avoid the need for surgery etc thus far unlike some that have it really bad. You can be your own worst enemy sometimes with lifestyle choices, but thinking and living healthy with good water intake, some exercise, wholesome food and good mental hygiene will help (appreciate that easier said than done) | |

I had to do FODMAP diet for a bit which required removing onions and garlic from my diet (among other things). Miserable experience. Asafoetida was a close approximation for certain things but onion is in absolutely everything premade. I never realised how much I use onion when cooking.

It's the bulb part that does most of the damage; I found I could get away with using some of the green tops (as in spring onions & leek leaves, but you have to be careful & pick only the really tender young-ish ones, not the older very fibrous ones of leeks) for flavour. Edit - you could also try garlic leaves in spring/early summer instead of the bulbs. We're lucky that they grow wild here, so don't have to cultivate any, as I've never seen them in shops. | Irritable bowel syndrome on 10:41 - Jul 4 with 745 views | Mookamoo | One of my big triggers is stress. Irrespective of how I control the diet, that is what causes the flare ups. One thing I have found is using mushroom gummies has made my gut less angry. They contain a variety that do different things, so I'm not sure if the one that helps mental processing is helping the stress, or the one that helps gut health is working, but either way, they help.
| Irritable bowel syndrome on 13:37 - Jul 4 with 625 views | TwoKnightsInIpswich | Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences, tips etc. I've been having regular "flare-ups" for months and my family has a history of Crohn's and IBS and I've probably kidded myself that I wouldn't have an issue. As a vegan maintaining a low Fodmap diet has added complications but its something I'll have to do as the stomach cramps and constantly rushing to toilet is not good. Has anyone had success with daily probiotic supplements, any they recommend? [Post edited 4 Jul 14:07]
