An 18 year old taking a penalty in a shootout? 23:47 - Jul 3 with 1015 viewsgiant_stow

Not great I reckon, even if he'd scored. Apart from anything, the older players just shouldn't have had it.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Felt for the lad even before he took it.

Although not directly relevant, I'm sure there was a logical mathematical reason why you should put your best pen takers later in a shoot-out rather than earlier, that came out a few years ago.

Interesting, to me that's counter intuitive- i would want to get off to the best start possible.

The goal keeper substitution didn't bear much fruit either.

There was some sort of study done which said there was more pressure on later takers, but this was balanced out by the need to keep some of them earlier in the line up otherwise you might already be out of it if you missed the first 2 or 3. I think they concluded your best taker should go third because third always takes a pen?

no because we had that debate back when Portugal went out on penalties few years back and Ronaldo was set to take the last penalty, but it never got that far in the shootout, so he just had to stand there thinking about the fact he'd have scored but never got the chance and so his team were out.

youve got to start well in a penalty shootout, and keep the momentum up. dont try and play 3d chess with it as youll come a cropper, just keep putting them in the goal, and the pressure will build for the other side.

He looked like he would probably miss it. Imagine being Nodge's new hero, not taking a pen and leaving it to an 18 year old.

I'd be embarrassed.

From chatGTP:

The study you're probably thinking of comes from sports economists and statisticians who analysed thousands of penalty shootouts. Their main findings were:

Your best penalty taker should almost never go first.
Your best taker is often most valuable in the 4th or 5th round, when the pressure is highest and the outcome is more likely to hinge on a single kick.
Why not first?

The first penalty is relatively low pressure because there are plenty of kicks left to recover from a miss. By the fourth or fifth round:

A successful penalty may win the shootout.
A miss may eliminate your team.
Players face much greater psychological pressure.

If your best taker is the most likely to score under pressure, you gain more by saving them for one of these decisive moments.

But there's another school of thought

Some analysts argue you should send your most reliable taker first, because:

Scoring the opening penalty sets a positive tone.
Falling behind early is psychologically damaging.
Teams that kick first already have a measurable advantage.

There's evidence that the team kicking first wins around 55–60% of shootouts, largely because they're constantly putting the other side under pressure.

What do managers actually do?

Interestingly, many managers still choose this sort of order:

Good taker
Good taker
Average
Good
Best

rather than simply ranking them 1–5 by ability.

What does the evidence suggest overall?

A practical strategy is:

1st: Very reliable (but not necessarily your absolute best)
2nd & 3rd: Strong takers
4th or 5th: Your very best penalty taker, especially if they're mentally resilient

The risk, of course, is that if your team loses before the fifth kick, your best player never gets to take one. That's why some coaches prefer putting their best taker 4th rather than 5th—it captures much of the "high-pressure" benefit while making it more likely they'll actually get to kick.

So, in short: yes, there is credible research suggesting your best penalty taker is often most valuable in the fourth (and sometimes fifth) position, rather than first. The strongest modern recommendation is often 4th, as it balances importance with the likelihood that the shootout is still alive.

He was actually very poor. Kept diving too early, which allowed the penalty taker the option to put it the other side. Bet the initial goalkeeper was fuming.
