but Key has been doing and following what the ECB want him to do, to sack him would be to admit theyve got it wrong, or a new power structure comes in to replace them.
the one thing he might get caught with holding and blamed for is the 100 failing to attract enough sponsors theyve had to resort to betting ones again, but simply not having a good enough test team isnt of importance to the ECB if they can still sell out Lords, and make money from the giggle cricket, theyre happy.
the interesting thing would be who would want to take up the test team just as one part of the job, theyd want to be defacto head coach and not work with McCullum alongside them, as there will obviously be a completely different approach between McCullum and whoever replaces him, thats precisely why he has had to step down, and that wont co-exist across all formats successfully.
so we shall see.will they have appointed someone by the Pakistan series, which is about 5 weeks away...dont know but the idea someone comes in by September and turns the test team around to be successful in the Ashes next summer seems optimistic, there are only currently 8 test matches planned between now and the first ashes test next year, and 2 of those seem to be one off games, 1 of which is against Australia. |  | | |

Key's role is MD of the England men's team. He isn't at all responsible for decision about the Hundred, such as sponsors etc, although he might be expected to have some input with regards to how this impacts the England teams.
What is part of his role is to decide how the new England Test coach interacts with McCullum given the crossover of multi-format players. | |

Totally agree, he's saved himself for now. "Keysey" has been weak, much too chummy with McCullum, Stokes and the team. He sets the culture as much as BM and BS do. Maybe I'm being harsh but seeing all the players refer to him as Keysey makes me think there is not much discipline, thst doesn't mean it has to be an oppressive atmosphere but he's in charge of mens cricket.
Even in football that doesn't happen, captain becomes player manager, next day they are at least Gaffer from there on. It sets a tone.

If he was playing today he'd be 100% a face at all the drinking spots. I have no issue with the team and staff celebrating a win or even commiserating/team bonding. But you'd hope enough professionalism might pervade to wait until after a series to really let loose.

Key has been flailing around ever since the Ashes debacle. Trying to cover up Brook's night club indiscretion (the night before a ODI & he was captain FFS) was big error #1. It was bound to get out. And post Ashes, Key decided to try to look all tough with the ridiculous curfew, which wasn't properly explained & now they've come out with a load of detail which is even more confusing.
However, Key realised something had to change so axing McCullum from the Test side buys him time. The 20/20 side has been doing well, although I'm not sure how much of that is down to coaching. India's XI has looked experimental, with one eye on the 2027 World Cup,.
Flower would be a sensible choice for the Test team (revert to discipline) if he can be prised away from the franchises. No need to pick a captain (please not Brook) until a coach is in place. | |
