The problem that the US government seems to have at the moment is that they seem to forget that these organisations are, well, International. Not US owned, which makes it kind of difficult for them to dismantle them.

They are indeed International, but if the US can count on support of existing members in return for grubby little favours elsewhere, then this would be the path.

Your last paragraph is precisely what the Europeans should be doing. The long term plan, unknown to US, has to be to throw them out of Europe.
Trump has made it crystal clear that agreements and alliances with the US exist only for them to extort. When Trump vacates the planet, that’ll be his legacy. There’s no trusting them ever again.
