Taylor, Philogene and Clarke (J) on the move 08:22 - Jul 29 with 2058 viewsITFC_Essex

According to some reports over the last few weeks, it will be interesting to see who we're bringing in to replace them if that's true. At least those three do have some top-flight experience in this country, so I would hope, if they are off, we do bring some players in who have done it at this level before, and not solely rely on foreign gems who may or may not come good.

The Premier League is a steep learning curb and while I do appreciate we're trying to use other markets effectively, but a bit like last time, if we recruit too heavily from one area (such as the Championship) you can end up with too many players trying to learn the league on the job as it were, and the Premier League simply won't take any prisoners.

Wasn't that a case of mistaken identify on behalf of the journalist reporting it - i.e., H Clarke rather than J Clarke?

Yes, they referenced the wrong Clarke.

Case by case I guess. If Philogene wants out then there's little point us trying to keep him, we just need to get the best price we can.

Like you there's a part of me that think's its high risk to be moving on the proven Championship players like Philogene or Clarke if he does go (I've not seen those rumours), in favour of big tickets and longer term punts like Emersonn / Egeli etc. JP and JC have been there and done it t that level, not just with us but 1 or 2 clubs previously. Doesn't mean they're Premier League ready but certainly gives us some weapons in our Arsenal should we find ourselves back there in 12 months.

We have to roll the dice at some point though, and there's no guarantee they would want to stay next summer if we do go down.

Quite apart from all that a curve, by definition, has a range of gradients, so the 'steep learning curve' which everybody seems to throw into comments willy-nilly these days, should probably really be 'on a steep part of the learning curve'.

It drives me around the bend.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Will there be any consideration when we buy of us getting relegated and us using the majority of the squad for a promotion push next season? I understand we need to upgrade, but if we fill the squad too full of expensive, foreign imports we could have a real problem in the Championship. Wont be the first time, a relegated side has too many egotistical, expensive flops struggling in a tough league like the Championship. Whilst we need to both sell and buy, I think it'd handy to hold on to players like Clarke and Taylor. Maybe squad players this season, but starters next season.

Preparing in case of failure is all very well, but not when it detracts from the chance of success.

We were arguably the wrong side of that line last time (altho, IMO, there were other factors at play in our 2024-25 recruitment).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Certainly a fair concern but we have to roll the dice at some point. I think our squad is going to look very different in 14 months time to how it does today, irrespective of what division we're in. It'll be another 10 in, 10 out scenario whether we stay up or not I imagine.

Round the bend heh? Depends how sharp the curve (or curb) of the bend is really.
