Akpom could surprise 21:58 - Aug 4 with 3642 viewsNutkins_Return

Said it after the groaning About paying a fee. But if we had just bought an unknown La Liga striker for £7m and he was having Akpom's pre-season we'd be feeling like it was money well spent.

I don't think he is going out and getting 20 goals but I could see him getting 7-8 whilst not being the regular starter. Who knows but he's playing himself into a good squad option.

At Boro in his first season he got 5. Was potentially on his way out and then went and got 30 the next season. Needs to feel loved and needs good delivery and balls into the box. He game is arriving onto balls. Maeda and Fatawu could be great for him.

Does feel more likely Hirst could go with him looking to fit an O'neill system and GON speaking very highly of him.

If you were to ignore his last two seasons and then say we’d signed a striker for £7m from Ajax, you’d be pretty happy with that. I know we were all pretty hopeful when he first came in.

Maybe he just couldn’t get to grips with McKenna’s system, but GON is the perfect match for him.

He’s big and physical and knows where the net is. He may just come in handy.

I haven't heard or seen everything he ever said since he signed for us, but the compilation video of his goals that was put out on his arrival screamed "I'm primarily a CF" (a 9 if you prefer contemporary jargon).

“At Ajax, I played left-wing, right-wing, but I think my best position is probably as a second striker behind the striker.”

“I can also play as a nine, I can also play on the side, but I’d say behind the striker, linking up the play, arriving deep in the box and just sniffing out good spaces and opportunities to cause some damage“

The vast majority of his goals in *that* season were in the 10 / playing off the striker

He was very disappointing last season and looked way off it. Granted, he was a bit unlucky in some games hitting the wood or forcing a good save, but his all round play was pretty sh1t. Maybe a different system will help.
