| AI used to design new viruses 20:14 - Aug 6 with 638 views | StokieBlue | A pretty shocking title but in reality they have used what are essentially LLM's that understand genetics rather than language to design viruses that infect bacteria. The aim of this is to look for alternative treatments to anti-biotics resistant bacteria which is on the rise at an alarming rate. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art It's a double-edged sword though, it could produce amazing breakthroughs for medicine but the same technology could eventually be used to engineer a rather horrible virus which could infect people. It's getting to the point now where there will have to be heavy regulation of these types of models, although that probably won't stop a determined and wealthy individual/organisation/country. The kind of thing that could be created by a nutter in a garage. Scary stuff | | | |
| AI used to design new viruses on 20:46 - Aug 6 with 495 views | NthQldITFC | How far away is that 'eventually' I wonder? Tech gets out to 'market' very easily in reality, doesn't it, and IP doesn't ever really stay in the bottle. I just don't see that regulation will realistically work with something as substanceless as data sets and algorithms and as Moore's Law-governed as processing power. Either bad intention or carelessness has the real potential to be species-threatening now. Not saying there's a different answer, it just feels inevitable with an animal which has evolved cleverness without wisdom, and fundamentally has an ego-driven psychology. | |

In reality it won't be long before it's very easy to design something very nasty. I guess it's better it's spoken about and discussed rather than ignored. SB

We're a strange species that seems to be terminally blinded by tech and profit. It's as if the human race collectively believes that its all one big Hollywood movie that will finish and we can all go home to our sofas and product catalogues, nice and safe.

| AI used to design new viruses on 21:17 - Aug 6 with 342 views | BloomBlue | This is what confuses me with AI. If AI can create these viruses isn't just as easy to ask AI to create a cure? AI isn't restricted to one request. People keep talking about the negative side of AI, but as per my point what's stopping AI being used for the positive. Ultimately doesn't AI put itself into a continuous circle? AI finds new deadly virus, 2 mins later AI finds cure for deadly new virus, etc etc | | | |

Have you never seen a sci-fi movie? The problems start when AI decides we're the problem that needs sorting/eradicating, we're all f@cked then.

It's not usually that easy. Often it's easier to create something destructive rather than something that will cure it. Even if the AI can quickly find a cure it needs to be manufactured and since the cure was started later millions will have died by the time any cure is ready. AI can absolutely be used for positive things, as it has in the news story I linked. The issue is the exact same tech can be used for bad things as well. SB

| AI used to design new viruses on 23:54 - Aug 6 with 100 views | MJallday | I’m currently sat at black hat in Las Vegas. Agentic AI is the hot topic. Too much to go through here but the TLDR is “it’s unstoppable” Edit - to answer the Above question. Defensive AI can’t adapt as fast as offensive AI. How can you defend against something you don’t know is coming! The only solution. Air gap everything [Post edited 6 Aug 23:56]

| AI used to design new viruses on 00:05 - Aug 7 with 70 views | armchaircritic59 | If the human race produces it's own current day Frankenstein monster, it will only have itself to blame. I use AI a lot for various different things and will continue to do so. The stories we've heard are all true, but sometimes produced by people with an " agenda ". That being said I would agree with anyone ( including The Pope, not something I'd ever thought I'd type! ), that we've got to the stage where some sort of regulation may be necessary, not to stifle development of a tool that in the right hands can be a marvelous asset, but to ensure it doesn't evolve quicker than we can control it. | | | |
