If you’re talking about the writing on the outside of the stand it wasn’t there for the whole of last season.

Wrong. I work across the car park from that stand and look at it everyday and I can assure you that it was not there last season. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Okay, let's be clear what we're talking about. The 'Ipswich Town Football Club' letters haven't been on the OUTSIDE of the Cobbold Stand for a while now (not sure why it was removed). But 'Ipswich Town Football Club' was on the INSIDE of the Cobbold Stand overlooking the pitch last season. Are you saying this has been removed over the summer?
| Cobbled ITFC signage on 18:31 - Aug 10 with 1456 views | blueden60 | The lettering on the outside of the Cobbold Stand was removed last year. I seem to recall a small part of one letter was broken off, which is probably why they removed it. They are not likely to replace it until the stand is rebuilt. | | | |

Yep I have a memory of posting about it maybe even in 23/24. Ashton said that was the first thing he and his wife saw when they first came down and that she said that the font and lettering was so iconic that we had to use it. That's where the font we now use comes from. Pretty sure he also said that it looked to them like the ground had its back to the town so I expect a big part of the Cobbold redevelopment will be changing that. I hope they've kept that lettering and will use it. Cobbold is so beautiful! Any design has to echo it somehow. [Post edited 10 Aug 19:10]

Ashton was talking about the lettering in the stand roof edge inside the ground. The stand was named the Portman Stand, replacing the Chicken Run in 1971. I’m guessing, but I don’t think it was renamed Cobbold stand until around Burley’s time. I’d bring the old Chicken Run name back!! Not least because in the early 1900s when it was built, they did rent the space out for chickens when the team weren’t playing. In terms of the orientation of the ground, you are right. Ashton’s comment was that the main entrance was on the wrong side to the town. Not sure it matter personally. As for the appearance of the Cobbold (East, Portman, Chicken Run), it was smart for its day and looked huge compared to the rest of the ground in the 70s. Should it be replaced, i suspect the replacement won’t echo it beyond the lettering. [Post edited 11 Aug 7:19]

Wasn't he referring to the west stand? You can see that as you drive down London road.
