| Anyone know how O'Neil has approached cup competitions at previous clubs? 19:36 - Aug 10 with 3539 views | Dubtractor | McKenna could do almost no wrong in my eyes, but the extent to which he didn't seem to even try to win cup matches did annoy me a little. It would be nice to go and watch a cup game knowing we might put some effort in. | |

| Anyone know how O'Neil has approached cup competitions at previous clubs? on 08:08 - Aug 11 with 481 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | Early season cup fixtures are a good opportunity to rotate and build more minutes into the legs of the players who will benefit from it - especially those that will not feature as heavily against Sunderland a few days before. For example, Matusiwa and Taylor have not had much of a pre-season, so this game will be one they will benefit from more than others. On paper, we should beat Leicester, even if it is a rotated squad, but we haven't got a great record against them. | |

I've not got a problem with a bit of rotation where needed, and understand that is needed, but I'd still want to see a team putting everything into trying to win. Too often we've seen limp efforts against lower league teams. As others have said that wasn't unique to McKenna in our recent managers, but he was the last man in post.

I take your point, but I think it is unfair on McKenna and the team that has played in those competitions. Fifth round of the FA Cup one year - to be knocked out on penalties that night. 0-2 down against a Premier League side to come back and win 3-2. Gave a real honest performance as a L1 side against the Championship high flyers (Burnley) and forced a replay. To add, played well in the replay and we were unlucky. The only game I recall from memory which was a real poor show was the Bromley match, but overall, I don't think we were that bad in cup competitions under McKenna and I do think he is harshly criticised, but that is my opinion.

You're forgetting Colchester, Wimbledon and Maidstone....

I am not sure that throwing away cup games had a major contribution to the promotions. This is reenforced by the fact hat we ave been doing this well before the recent promotions. Our relegation was not halted by this strategy either.

But early season is also when we are trying to build a team out of new players, and the more time they spend playing alongside each other the quicker that's going to happen. Changing half the team for one midweek cup tie really doesn't benefit anyone. The "minutes in legs" thing is just a phrase the coaching staff use to keep fringe players involved. What it actually does is sends a message to us fans that "we can't be arsed" but thanks for watching the reserves.

From memory, we played more than enough of a team against Maidstone to win but we were outrageously sloppy in front of goal. And the goals they scored had fouls in the build-up iirc, certainly the first one did.

There's a lot of assumptions in there, when really it's impossible to know the benefits of players getting a rest or fringe players getting minutes etc A quick look at the lineup for our last fa cup outing against saw starts for Hirst, McAteer, Neil, Greaves, Kipre and minutes for O'Shea, Taylor, Mehmeti, Clarke and Azon. All of that would have been useful for the run in, especially for those who were new to the squad like Mehmeti and Neil, or those who were seen as fringe players at the time like Taylor and McAteer | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Although I kinda of understand it, it is very dispiriting to go all the way to say Bromley on a Tuesday night and watch a reserve team who don't know each other and aren't really interested. If we can be bothered to go and spend good money supporting them I expect to see the club put out a team that wants and tries to win. A good League Cup run is something a Premier League team should aspire to. |
I understand it if it's the FA Cup because the third round comes after the busy Xmas schedule, but I've never understood the logic behind rotation in August when the players are all fresh and it's an opportunity to build some cohesion and momentum for the season
