| I see yet another K Phillips loan! on 09:44 - Aug 12 with 1787 views | Churchman | According to the internet, he was given a six year contract in 2022 having signed for £45m. His salary estimate is £7.8m a year. Happy days for him. You could argue that it was a relatively cheap punt for Man City too, given their unlimited wealth and no rules applying to them. I’d be interested to know how much if his salary we paid. My guess is as a Premier League club, all of it for that season. Utter waste of money. I suspect Sheffield United will pay only a proportion and you never know, the step down might benefit them both. Wouldn’t hold my breath though. Looks washed up to me. Still, two years and about £15m to roll into the bank account? Not bad work if you can get it. | | | |

Man City's accountant must wince every time that wage comes out. We wouldn't have been paying him £150k a week, he'd just come off that absolutely awful loan spell with West Ham. I can't imagine Sheff U are paying much more than 20/30K of that this year.

It wouldn’t surprise if we did pay the lot. As a Premier League club desperate for a midfielder why wouldn’t we? A £7.8m gamble? With the gift of hindsight, it looks a stupid bit of recruitment, but I guess it might have paid off. I agree about what Sheffield Utd might be paying though. As for Man City, and the other Sky Six clubs, they operate on another planet really.

I think it's highly unlikely we paid anywhere close to £7.8M for Phillips. That would have been 13% of our total wage bill, and way above the average we paid of >£2.4M. More likely to have been half that at most.

quoted as 70-ish thousand at the time iirc, still undoubtedly a gamble that backfired!

That is plausible money-wise. Yes, it didn't work out - but I think that is partially down to bad luck. He was beginning to look good at the point he was sent off against Leicester and then out injured, and never got back close to that when he returned. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I hope you are right. All transfers are gambles but even at the time that one struck me as a bit desperate after his efforts at West Ham.

I was told it cost us in the region of £5m, combination of wages and loan fee.
